15 minute time-lapse map of every nuke test carried out between 1945 and 1998...

Morbidly fascinating and I don't know how accurate it is but still yikes

Cracking, nuclear war is one of those subjects which both fascinates me and terrifies me.

I remember watching Threads as a kid, only to hear an air raid siren (flood warning) test and remember the terror for the next ten minutes trying to convince my mum to duck and cover..... smile

Re-post but very interesting still.

What I'd like to know is when they test them underwater, doesn't the radiation kill everything in that area and spread out further and kill more?

Water is much better than air at absorbing radiation.

Also underwater tests were banned by the limited test ban treaty back in 63, along with atmospheric tests, presumably due to the release of radioisotopes into the marine environment.

That's from "Atomic Journeys: Welcome to Ground Zero" I think (or one of the others in the series). They're all worth watching if you're interested in nukes.
