Better drivetrain for my Vixen S3
Discussion
Read a lot of topics on this subject in this forum.
Never a result that gave a complete solution.
Or it was to expensive because bids had to be made by specialist I do not know here in Holland.
So my idea is;
- swap the original driveshafts for stronger TR6 items that fits to the
- swap the Spitfire diff for TR6 diff so new driveshafts fit
- swap original propshaft fpr TR6 type, fits the diff but not the gearbox.
I checked the overall dimensions and it looks that it will fit.
Has anybody done the conversion or parts of it as indicated her above, or has an good proposal thats is not to expensive.
Or am I totally wrong?

When I got a new chassis for my S3, David Gerald offered to make it so that the M series diff carriers could be used, allowing the fit of Spitfire,TR6 or Jag diffs. Looking at the changes from the original chassis, it's really
just swopping in a couple of new rails with brackets, quite simple really.
Although Adrian reckons the TR6 isn't any better than the Spitfire (I disagree, but everyone is entitled to their opinion) I used a TR6 diff because I had access to one cheap, so I swopped the original drive shafts for TR6 ones (M series again I think) and it all fits together nicely.

NO, you assumed wrong...given that Hans has not had a bespoke chassis to allow the standard 3 off the shelf M series carriers to be used..WHY would he limit himself to old school differentials...look through the threads here and modern versions can be fitted, pretty lightweight things, that can also be LSD.just swopping in a couple of new rails with brackets, quite simple really.

Thanks Adrian and Andy.
This is exactly my dilemma.
I think whopping in TR6 stuff is easy and better having experience with my TR250. No problems at all and no wining diff.
Go for a better and modern diff I do understand but do not know a specialist to make the propshafts and driveshaft fit to the diff.
And buying from England with those transport costs is far above my budget. Need some money left for set of spring/dampers from Exactly.
Any other solution?.
The noise of the diff of my friends Vixen is why I want something (much) better.

Could you not just recondition the Spitfire diff so it doesn't whine?
The on that was in our 1600M when we got it didn't whine, but did have a clonk, we've put a recon'd one in and it now whines a bit but doesn't clonk,
I don't notice it most of the time anyway due to other noises.
And unless you've got big power, isn't the TR6 diff just going to be more weight for no real gain?

Adrian, Fair enough, and you're right, there are more modern and lighter diffs around, and they will be better than the older ones.Adrian@
What I had in mind, but should have explained, was that there are conversion sets around for both 4HU Jag and TR6 mountings to later type diffs. But then if you have to mod the chassis anyway, I guess it's a moot point, just mod for the newer diff in one go.
I broke a GT6 3.27 diff with a tuned 2500 engine, which was scary, but knew that Saloons, Stag, Dolly Sprints all use the TR6 type diff....I never managed to break one in the PI Saloons I had.
I would agree that getting rid of the Spitfire diff is probably a good thing, especially if you plan to have a heavy right foot, but more necessary to change with a bigger or tuned engine.

What's the reason for swapping ?
We normally swap the diff in the triumphs (spitfires, GT6's etc) for 188mm BMW units, and modify a set of e39 driveshafts to fit. Mainly to get rid of the maintanance demanding U joint halfshaft and getting a wide range of ratios for a low cost.
It can easyly be mounted in a TVR subframe, specially if the diff lid is removed, and replaced with a 5mm steel plate (that can weld to the subframe)
Making propshaft adaptors / propshafts and driveshaft's is quite easy, and if normal tollerances is keept is balancing not nessasary
Home made propshaft (the bread-rolling-pin) and a combo of a solid E36 and a hollow e39 one making up a new driveshaft

See...I would of thought a Vixen would be just as easy...and good taste in ice cream too,We normally swap the diff in the triumphs (spitfires, GT6's etc) for 188mm BMW units, and modify a set of e39 driveshafts to fit.
