Best credit card perks/points tips needed
Discussion
I've been looking into a credit card eg Amex purely to get free travel/air miles/cash back just because if I can get a free first class flight to the states per year it seems to make sense.
Trouble is I dont have very high expenses that I could pay on a credit card.
How much do you have to spend to make it worth it? What are the best schemes? Any other tips?
I have the odd shopping trip for my other half, the odd thing for myself eg watches etc, fuel and general shopping plus holidays but that doesn't amount to tens of thousands per month so is it worth it?
Don't people charge to take Amex anyway?
What do you need to spend per month to make it worth it?

I've got an Amex standard card. 1 air mile per £1 spent. When I got it, I had the option to pay for the card and get 3 miles per £1. Wish I had now, didn't realise how much I'd spend on it!
Anyroad, I think its worthwhile - it costs you nothing and you only get charged from smaller companys who pass on their charges to you. Many companies don't accept Amex as its too expensive for them. For that situation, Amex providers are now providing dual-cards these days so you get both an Amex and a Visa card. Visa gets 1 mile for every £3 but its all linked to the same account. Its really easy and really good.
Petrol stations, restaurants, supermarkets all take Amex so it soon adds up. My virgin airmiles are just ticking along in the background. Its costing me nothing and I've already got free upgrades on flights banked to use at some point in the future.

Mrs Saleen has the Amex dual card through Virgin, puts stuff like fuel and shopping on it and if you shop at Tesco and have a clubcard you can get your points swapped to airmiles @ 1 clubcard point = 2.5 virgin airmiles, they even send out vouchers every now and then like...'pay with amex and get double points'. As said already, it doesn't cost her anything and only spends anywhere between £200-400 a month but surprising how quickly the air miles rack up

I've never been one for airmiles but have an AMEX platinum cashback card.
Costs £2pm but I got 5% back in cash on everything I spent in the first 3 months and 1.25% from there, normally clocking up about £250 a year off my september bill.
I also have the old egg card - now baclaycard which works on the same principal but at only 1% cashback and costs £1pm - used where AMEX isn't accepted.

Thanks all. So this one that gives 3 miles per pound interests me.
If say I spend £10k on a watch does that mean I get 3000 miles worth off lights that I pay taxes on? Suppose I could do it for fuel, shopping, holidays etc and get a fair bit back.
What else do I need to know. What are the catches. Which is the best card.
