Does anyone know a definitive answer to this question?

When you retrofit very bright HID headlights to a car, do they have to include automatic levelling to pass an MOT like the cars that have it as standard do?

An auto-levelling system is a legal requirement, but I personally know several cars going through regular MoTs with HID kits / no leveller.

Many 993 owners have done the hid online / autolamps online kit. Easy DiY, excellent results, £300 or so.

Fit the lo beam bulb clip kit while you're at it, and don't be tempted by 100W bulbs for main beam - the bulb sockets are PLASTIC ............. see December Porsche Post for details.

cheers, Maurice

prepare yourself for hundreds of people flashing you if they are too bright or misaligned.

Can you tell I hate bright dazzling headlights

We seem to have this discussion every winter after the clocks change

Hey Maurice - how does this work with the Porsche Litronics then - my car is equipped with them but I don't believe that they have an auto-levelling system?

Anyone fancy a challenge?

Anyone converted a 928 with pop-ups to HID?

Steve in the 9m office has done a lot of work putting together the information on suitable HID kits for the Porsche range, the link below shows the installation of a H1 kit on a 993 (same kit for 996/boxster). There are further links on the page for the H4 kit on a 964.

Ninemeister HID conversion

Hopefully these show that HID conversions are relatively simple to do provided that you have the correct kit of parts for the car.

Excellent info Colin and I notice that your kit is E marked for street legal use.

Are you able to answer the 'self levelling' question or am I once again talking out of my rear end that it is not neccesary.

There have been a few 944 people on other lists talking about HID upgrades. I believe we have H4 bulbs (which are listed on your page) so presumably they would fit too?

To be fair I only design & tune engines, you are better talking to Steve about kit specifics since he has done all the research. I am sure that the H4 kit will fit a 944, 968 or 928 but to date all sales and interest has been for the 911 & boxster models, however any prospective purchaser can be reassured that we will work with them to fit the kit correctly.

The Autolamps kit is a piece of cake to fit, and the improvement is incredible. Self levelling is technically a requirement according to the ministry, but my 993 C4 sailed through it's MOT with no problems. The mechanics used their calibration equipment to align them properly and asked no questions whatsoever.

The kit can be removed when you sell the car on and the original bits re-fitted.
