Sorry if this is in the wrong section mods, but we are looking to buy 4 year old Layacable a Scalextric set for christmas.
If anyone has any pics of their sets or any recommendations on what we should buy, please let us know.
The boy loves star wars and I have noticed that there is a "themed" set available but the reviews dont fill me with confidence.
It would be nice if this turned into a "Show me your Scalextric" set thread!
Anyone?!

Top gear layout - keep meaning to buy the extra bits we need for this.
I picked up a pretty basic set for junior sawman, and then we added a few bits and a couple of carrera morgans when on a trip to the morgan factory a couple of years ago (which are excellent runners)

I saw a great book in past times on scalextric, loads of classic track designs, I want to do a Monaco that it had In there.I picked up a pretty basic set for junior sawman, and then we added a few bits and a couple of carrera morgans when on a trip to the morgan factory a couple of years ago (which are excellent runners)
Got it out today funnily enough with my brother, annoyingly missing a corner piece from my Endurance GT1 911 box set, so we were stuck with the oh so fun 0 style track...
I bought a new set with 911 GT3s back in 2009 when we bought our house (my now wife was still living in Bristol trying to find work here). Built a 30ft long track in the spare room. Unfortunately I found my power requirements were a little beyond the equipment I had and the cars would run out of juice on the opposite side of the circuit! Hoping to get my attic boarded up soon so I may get it set up in there with some Scalextric digital. 6 car LeMans in the dark?
Personally, I'd avoid any "Start" or "Micro" sets. The track is hard plastic and an absolute git to get working properly, the slightest touch breaking the circuit and stopping the cars.
Have just sold his Disney Cars Micro set on eBay this week having bought my 6 year-old son this set earlier in the year:

Simple layout, solid cars with nothing to break off (he's tried realy hard). Proper 1:32 scale flexible track, goes together better and stays together. Lots more accessories and cars available as he gets older and can also be converted to digital which the Start and Micro can't.
Bought mine from an ebay seller called kerrisontoys. They have it listed now for £79.99 with free P&P (no affiliation, just a satisfied customer)

As above, get the proper 1:32 scale track and nothing less, as it will be worthwhile in the long run.
My dad runs a board which is about 5x9' and has digital as an option too. With a collection of cars probably approaching a 4-digit number you spend more time choosing what to drive than you do driving it!
It'll be back down at Christmas, for the annual tournament. Although I was 'done over' last year by the referee and I'm still sour about it!

Never had any problems with either of our micro sets; oldest got a Simpsons set years back, still working fine. Picked up the overdrive set over the summer holidays on a particularly wet day, and similarly - no problems at all.Have just sold his Disney Cars Micro set on eBay this week having bought my 6 year-old son this set earlier in the year:

But longer term, Micro Scalextric makes no sense - track part availability is dire, as is the selection of cars.
We picked up a set at a reasonable discount from the scalextric website itself a year or two ago. Can only assume it was a discontinued line or something.
My experience leads me to the following.
If you are not setting up a permanent track (ie attached to a board/table) and just whipping it out on the carpet, the track will develop a bend in many of the pieces. When this happens, long wheelbase cars, like the Maserati mc12 we got with it will stall over 80% of the track joints.
The twin pack of minis we bought work fine though.
Am now in the process of working out which track pieces I need for the top gear layout.

I started building a track in my loft. Boarded it out at a nice height. Set up a small ish track while i was buying all the track i needed off ebay etc to make a big set up. The bad thing about it is half the time its either to hot or to cold in there to use it.
The boards are in a L shape From memory it's about 15ft wide and 25ft long

The bit waiting for track

You can get that to work easily just by adding power tapsGassing Station | Scale Models | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
