Just got to the point where I need 4 new tyres.
I have 17" rims on a cooper.
Now, currently it is sat on ( was when I bought it ) 205 40 17s.
Should I buy the same, buy 205 45 17s, put winter tyres on the front, normal on the back, or sell the 17s, buy 16" and go from there?

What is the opinion of winters only on the front?

winters need to be fitted on all wheels, or not at all

I have done it in the past and am not dead, but it's not advised.

The back is going to want to pass the front under any sort of deceleration.

Depends where you live and whether you have storage. Oop North I'd go for winters. Dahn Sarf a new set of summers.

4 winters on all wheels is highly recommended but when I lived in Glasgow plenty of taxis and drivers in Lowland Scotland use winters on the front only - Note: City speeds and crawling around at walking pace where the back won't overtake the front.

Dear J,

are they runflats?
More expensive to find a winter runflat but they are there.

Wisdom I receive is that narrower is better for winters so likely to be a taller tyre.

Keep an eye out on ebay. There's often a set of part used winters on steels available,
