Basically the mrs and I want a car she can drive to work that'll I'll also enjoy driving at the weekend. We've narrowed it down to these two. Budgets £8k.
What do we think?

Very different cars - are you thinking mk4 or 5 R32?

I had the mk4 when they first came out; epic soundtrack, ultra responsive throttle (I sometimes found myself kangarooing over speed bumps!), very refined and the interior is simple but superb (I hate fussy interiors) IMO. The engine is bullet proof and the AWD grip is very good - I did find it a little vague on/near the limit though and rarely felt I could completely push it like I can in our BMW.

I've only driven the lukewarm Meganes but it sounds like the R26.R is fairly loopy, very FWD (even with an LSD) and it'll be made of old socks and loo roll inside. However it'll be the keen drivers choice.

Was thinking mk5, the 4 just looks too dated. We weren't thinking of the R26.R but the regular R26 with rear seats.
My mrs just threw a kerb ball and said we should get the newer Megane, increasing the budget by £5k. Crazy woman, but tbh I prefer the look of it. Do they all have LSDs? It's quite confusing reading renault's spec, which they seemed to have changed several times.

I doubt that your wife will enjoy using an r26 to get to work everyday.

I think you'd struggle to find a decent mk5 for £8k?

Two entirely different beasts, I came from a clio r27 to a mk5 r32. They couldn't be more different - the golf is far nicer to drive everyday and of course you have that V6 :-)

The Renault every time if you love hooning around on B roads, the golf is much better at 'normal' quick driving as it has so much torque.

Have you considered a MK5 GTI? Probably more on budget. You could even get a decent Edition 30 for about 9grand which is more fun than the normal one!

are you sure? i'm getting bids as part-ex for mine of £6500, its a 2006 car (just pre-tax increase), fsh and a reasonably desirable spec - with leather and nav at 70k miles, 5 door dsg.

Looking around, it'd retail 8-10k depending on type of dealer, so i'd suggest a 8k budget would see him in a mk5

Mk4 had a nicer interior and IMO looked much better - that chrome grille surround on the mk5 looks gash as do the rather awkward exhaust pipes that look like an afterthought.

However the mk5 is based on a good chassis - the mk4 started off as one of the worst ever but someone the R people worked a LOT of magic on it because it really was pretty good.

The Konig seats on the mk4 looked good too but in reality, they were some dodgy leather (some reckon it wasn't real) and weren't actually very comfy. They were also too tall to fold forwards properly - they hit the roof!

I wish I could change the name of the thread as it's now Megane RS 250 Cup Vs an R32, with a budget of £13k.
I just went for a ride in a megane, and we both like it a lot.

I'd still have the R32 unless you aren't worried about depreciation or don't need the back seats. The R is a fast and agile cruiser so very different to the Megane. No contest on noise though.

13k should get you into a very nice 2009 R32 with a high spec. Check on R32OC for members cars - it's where I found mine and lots of good advice etc

What I really want is an Impreza STI 330 but she is point blank refusing because of some perceived problem with the "looks". I have a feeling that is I buy the Golf or Megane I will at some point be monstered by an Impreza and feel a bit silly. I really don't like the whole VW douche scene of air suspension and stance, but I do like the way the Mk5 R32 looks and especially how it sounds. If the Megane is the sharper car that is what I'd prefer and either of them is going to feel more refined that my Mrs current Mk1 Ford Ka. The Megane I saw earlier did. Gripped well too.

LSD on cups or cup chassis only. If it has a cloth interior it's a cup, so has the LSD and stiffer suspension. If it has a leather interior it is a sport, but you can spec the cup çhassis. Red callipers indicate the cup chassis, of course someone could paint them red, but if unsure give the details of the car to Renault and they can tell you what exactly it is.

I would get the Meganne myself they are a lot cheaper than the golf see below

http://www.pistonheads.com/classifieds/used-cars/r...

You can get into a 250 for not much over £10k now as well which may be an option...
http://www.pistonheads.com/classifieds/used-cars/r...

Seen you have increased the budget I would certainly get the 250 they remap to 300bhp and to be honest a R32 would not see which way one went unless it was pissing down with rain. I prefer the meganne inside and out and to me the only plus side of the golf is the exhaust note which is obviously a lot better than that of the renault.

Meh, shes now decided that £13k would be too much so were back to the R26.
Does the R26 has an LSD the regular 225 F1 lacks?

Never understand why people let their uninterested-in-cars partner dictate their choice of car. Makes no sense.

Exactly...unless of course they're paying (doubtful).

Golf to live with. Megane to thrash at the weekend.

Go for the golf.

It's money. We could afford £13k, but £8k would obviously leave us more for other things, and there are R26s for less than 6.
She'll be "living" with it, I'll be thrashing it. Leaning towards the Megane here, she prefers it too.
