Guess what? Another D70 with 18-70 lens turned up!

However, having read the riot act to the supplier who was, frankly, taking the p1ss, I've got the price down so that I can offer them at £870 + delivery (or you can collect). That still beats the latest Jessops price of £899.

If they don't go in a few days, I'll get them uplifted as frankly, the margin is not worth it.

Simpo, sorry chap, but just came across this on the old t'internet. Nikon D70 kit with 18-70DX Lens - £677.00

www.robertwhite.co.uk.

Anyone have any ideas why this models price has not just "eased" over the last few weeks, but has positively plummeted. And I thought it was only cars that depreciated like this..........

Cheers Phil. No worries, they're going back soon. The margin's not worth the aggro: I'll stick to taking pictures!

The internet and eBay make a mockery even of trade prices. For an SB800 Speedlight the 'trade' price in the UK is £235 + VAT. I can import a new one for £182 and take my chance on the duty and warranty.

That's the last time I hold stock!

No, not the D70. What really interests me about this in particular is the rapidity with which this cameras price has fallen. I know digital cams are in the midst of a very, very fast development cycle (much the same as pc's went through a few years ago), but compared to previous Canon or Nikon Dslrs, this pricing curve is just plain silly. The D70 has been raved about by most sources I've seen, be that dpreview, magazines or the shooters on here and I've certainly yet to see any evidence to suggest that it's anything other than superb.

So it has to beg the question, what the hell are Nikon doing to their brand value with such aggressive volume/pricing strategies, especially as this is diametrically opposed to their previous ethos. I'm extremely intrigued. Any thoughts?

I know that Nikon issued a new pricing deal about a month ago which probably explains the drops, but it does seem odd that a product that's getting such good reviews, and that they can't make fast enough, and is only effectively 6 months old, is being discounted at all. There's no sign of a replacement looming, and no immediate competition. Odd. Unless the plan is try to get everybody to buy a Nikon and try to keep them - or claw it back on lenses - I don't know.
However a lot of the low prices are caused by internet based pile-em-high outfits, who frequently make my task as a reseller untenable. My latest buy price is still higher than Dabs are selling them for: it rather makes a mockery of the whole thing.

Nikon have a fantastic brand, make fantastic cameras and have previously marketed along the lines of "it's the best, it's worth it". Short term, this new strategy may make the sales figures look great, long term it's impossible to recover market/price position once it's been given away, and IMHO, this is what Nikon are doing with the D70, giving it away. It alienates all but the discount box shifters, so people like Simpo, who've bought and supported the brand for years get shafted. Re the lens issue, I can fully imagine that Sigma may be a bigger winner in sales than Nikon. If i was working on a theoretical £1000 budget, a D70 Kit + maybe 2 sigmas make more sense than Kit + 1 Nikon.

Whats really interesting is taking the D70 situation in addition to the non-appearance of the D2x samples that were supposed to be available to the review sites "in the autumn" but have yet to appear and the long standing rumours of Fuji's interest in the company.

The only reason I can see a company like Nikon lowering the price of the D70 so soon in its life, is because they have competition.

Maybe they feel the Canon 300D is making too much headway in the market and they need to respond to it.
