clock pack ribbon cables

Anybody know where I can get replacements from or what type they are? I have had an intermittent fault for a while now with the dash, Paul Smith has had a look at the ECU and found no faults so the only variable is the ribbons between the ECU & dash pod.

You can make them by yourself, buy the ribbon cable and the connectors and press them together in a vice. Very easy.
You have to look for 'D-Sub Connectors'.

I have a new set sat in a drawer in the UK but I'm not back in the UK until the 22nd December if you can wait theat long. These are the ones to the dash pod from the dash ECU.

Did he check the dash pod too or just the ECU? because I too thought it was the ribbons but turned out to be a faulty + terminal on the pod.

Thanks for the offer Getsis, I will let you know if I can't get any in the mean time. It will work with the existing cables its just a pain in the arse if I have to take the dash pod & ECU out again when I get it back.

I sent Paul the clock pack & the ECU and it functions fine on his test rig so his suggestion was it could be the cables. The fault was very odd, intermitently when you turned the ignition on the red/amber shift lights would freeze and the LCD would not illuminate during the start up sequence. If you switched off/on again it was fine. Also the buzzer did not work. Paul run it up on his test rig and it was fine!

So effectively they are self making when you crimp the cable between the slot in the connectors then. I presume you can't make an arse of it?

I got mine from Racing Green but if I remember correctly they were quite expensive!!

Having had a quick look they should only cost a few quid to make-up, even less it the existing connectors can be re-fitted to new ribbons. I will investigate.....

They are but you need the cables with connectors you crimp on rather than the pre-wired type so the cables re orientated correctly to fit the space.

Yes, very simple and straightforward. Did this a lot in the old computer days where SCSI-Harddisks used a 50pin ribbon cable and the Standard IDE-Drives a 40pin cable.

BTW, you can reuse the old connectors, there's no problem with extracting the old cable from them.

i showed the back of the tam dash to my son, (he's doing a doctorate in computer studies at uni....). he just laughed at the "old school" technology.

i confess the sight of a pcb on the back of the dash scares me, at least if i have the chance of sticking a multimeter on something i've a hope!
