Relatives are going to spend a year working in SA and want to know the best 4x4 to buy for their stay. Best in this case means, cheap to buy, cheap to run, reliable and offloadable at the end. Performance and style are of lesser importance. Budget a few thousand sterling I'd imagine so no new land cruisers please.
I'd have thought something japanese?

I put it here as the SA forum is a little quiet - could it stay here please.

Do they have any other requirements such as off road ability, towing, hauling ect?

LR's probably aren't a bad choice if they are buying in the UK. Cheap and easy to maintain, repair and work on.

That said I suspect some Toyota's, Mitsubishi's and Nissans may work as well also in SA.

Buying and selling in SA.
I'd love to suggest a LR but I'd like them to talk to me when they come back!

Without even using the words Land Rover it's fairly easy to find picture examples of LR's still being used in Africa and in places where it counts.

I still stand by my original reply. smile

As we used to say in the other SA. 'If you want to go bush, get a Land Rover. If you want to come back, get a Landcruiser'

Toyota HiLux 4x4 dual cab diesel manual, or for a little more luuuuxury;

As above, get a Landcruiser. And buy it locally. You'll avoid the shipping costs and hassle of carnets (or, at least, some of them, depending how many countries they are travelling through).

A friend of mine shipped his UK Landcruiser down to Namibia (cost circa £2500, I think) and travelled around for 9 months. He had a great time, camping in his roof-tent.

On an unrelated note, I`d really get the fk out of SA if I was white. Genocide really is looming there...

Buy something local, with all the local security features.

Stuff like auto locking doors, panic buttons, and that sort of stuff.
