Following two other bikers to the NEC yesterday, filtering through stop/start traffic for several miles.

Police car came off hard shoulder, with lights etc on, to go to an emergency. As he pulled out, he told the lead biker (who is a bike instructor) to stop filtering.

I thought that it was all ok and so did the second biker (also an instructor) and we were making slow progress with minimum risk.

Why would we be stopped?

It's not unheard of for plod to be unaware that filtering isn't illegal.....

unless a biker had come off further up from filtering and hw was warning you?
Hence the reason why he had his lights on and told you to stop...maybe.

I do this on the M3 and into the city most days. Never been pulled over for it. Have passed many Police Cars and never been given a second glance.
I also have been out riding with a few police bikers / ex-police bikers, and its never been questioned.

What does the law state about fitering ?

Grey area I think

I know that if there is an accident while filtering then the biker is not looked upon in a good light
