Brief story - I helped a friend buy a campervan recently. Bought from a reputable company who was selling it for a regular customer of the dealer (a T.V star, no less smile ). Deposit paid by BACS to the dealer to secure it but balance was paid by BACS to the 'owner' of the van. However, it was advertised by the dealer as a 2.0l and sold by the dealer as the same, but the V5 has arrived and it is recorded as a 1.8l. No contact was had with the actual owner throughout, AFAIK.

Despite not going away in it yet, he loves the van and doesn't want to shunt it back to the dealer demanding a refund, but he was, IMO, misled into buying a 1.8l instead of a 2.0l (whether intentional or not is a matter of debate).

This, to me, is purely a matter of principle and not a case of having the wrong product (it's a cracking van!). However, I helped him source the van so feel partly culpable and want to back him up. How do the level headed, evenly tempered masses of PH think this should be approached? I don't want to risk him taking it 'too far' and finding himself out of pocket in any way, however, I don't think it should be let lie either.

Over to you....

What difference is there in the value of a 1.8 to a 2.0?

Some responsibility falls to the buyer to check what they are buying. If they aren't wanting a refund -- what are they actually wanting to achieve??

Answer... don't buy a vehicle without seeing the V5.

He's actually spoken to the dealer who has confirmed it is a 1.8 and not a 2.0l!!

I can't work out whether the dealer made a genuine mistake and doesn't realise it or if he's just bare-facing it now? I hope it's the first....

OK, so how much difference is there in the value of a 1.8 to a 2.0?

I sell Motorhomes and campers,Im struggling to think of any that were based on a van with a 1.8 and 2.0 available?

On a used van a small difference in engine size seldom makes much of a difference to the value but there are exceptions to this rule.

If you want to either list or p.m me what the make model and year of the van is I'll give you my (arguably) professional oppinion, if its a mainstream factory conversion and they book it in glass's with different engine sizes I'll let you know.

You're absolutely right - this is why I feel culpable and that I should do all I can to help him sort it.

My van is a 2.0l so I have a good basis for comparison. Ironically, it's a cracking 1.8l engine so pulls like a 2.0!! I also helped him research it, but the engine size isn't the main thing that we were researching - you kind of take it as a given really!

In terms of seeing the V5, again, you're absolutely right. But we didn't see it at the time, although I'm not sure if he did when collecting the keys as I wasn't with him.

Marginal IMO. But I only know from advert hopping when buying mine!

Is 200cc really that much of a worry when you have a motorhome, all the stting in buckets and trying to make a brew in 2 square feet would be my main concerns.

Actually, I have a VW Transporter urge at the moment.

So your mate is happy with it, and the difference in value is marginal?

I am struggling to see what you're hoping to achieve then.

It's not really an issue in terms of the actual van, more in terms of the principle really.

Do it, do it as fast as you possibly can!! The stting in a bucket is a misnomer - there are always bushes around which are much more forgiving on the cheeks.

As for brewing up - drink beer you fking pansy.

If it's hard to spot the different engine, then yes you should be looking for it and it is then understandable why the dealer got it wrong also.

If it isn't difficult to spot, then you should have spotted it. wink

Either way, you have still avoided the actual question of "what are you trying to achieve?"

What I'm trying to achieve is to help him out as he feels he's been a bit shafted and I feel partly responsible for him not getting the 2.0l he was originally after.

I think he's trying to achieve a bit of recompense to be honest. Be that in the form of this guy offering him something for his troubles (all the insurance shopping around with wrong data, all the 2.0l vans he missed and so on), or simply the bloke turning round and putting his hands up with an apology.
