Retrieving your private reg number

Has anyone here had a private plate on their car and then suffered a total loss - either stolen and not recovered or written off? If so, what happened to your plate?

We have two cars with a matched pair of plates which are worth more than the cars. The insurance company say they can be transferred easily but I just wondered how this happens in practice?

One of our neighbours had his car stolen and he said he couldn't apply to retrieve his private plate until 12 months later - just to be sure the original car was never going to reappear...and this has spooked me.

My sister had her Z4 written off with a private plate on - Her insurance company wrote a letter saying they held no interest in the plate, and the DVLA asigned it back to her within a metter of days
