Am I the only person complaining to VW UK about the 400 miles I get from a full tank of fuel on a new Mk7.
I used to run a Mk5 GTD 170bhp DSG.and get over 600 miles on a full tank and the performance was great, my daughter now runs that and is delighted, but I am far from happy with this new pup.
It also always seems to be in too higher gear and struggles up hills in 5th at 30 mph.
Is it just me or have I bought a lemon with an ECU problem.
I have been to three dealerships and they all say its performing as it should!

Depends how big the tank is compared with the Mk5. hehe How many miles has it done, though? I don't believe new cars are particularly great on fuel until they're completely run-in. Also, many modern automatic gearboxes seem intent on getting into top gear at the earliest possible opportunity, so I'm not surprised by that!

I've got a Mk7 with same engine/gearbox combo. I usually get 45-50mpg according to the trip computer, I like to make progress in it though. Have you tried running it in Eco mode?

Depends what you are doing in it and where you live etc. but I'd be shocked if you got less than 45mpg. If it is substantially under that something is wrong.

Used to thrash a Mk. 6 manual 140 TDI around the mountains of mid wales and it was almost impossible to get less than 45.

Motorways and longer distance A-road journeys at a sensible pace I would see 55-62.

The Mk7 has done 5250 miles and the tank is smaller by 1 gallon but I am always filling it up! I have just switched to eco and it changes up even sooner.

Have just switched to Eco but it changes up even sooner, I am getting 40 mpg on a run where I was getting nearly 60 mpg in the Mk5.

I suspect as it is less powerful you have your foot down more hence the poorer fuel economy.

40mpg with a heavy right foot sounds about right...

My mrs has this car, but with a manual gearbox. It's pretty difficult to average under 50mpg, and 60 is achievable if you drive with a bit of consideration. Tank is a bit smaller than her previous mk6, but 550 miles is still doable. It did take a good 5-6000 miles to get to this level though. Takes ages to warm up as well( hence poor economy on short trips).

Thanks for that, perhaps I have not done enough miles yet.

Honest John says 'REAL MPG'
Volkswagen Golf 2013 2.0 TDI GTD DSG
42-45 mpg

Volkswagen Golf 2013 2.0 TDI GTD
49-58 mpg

Volkswagen Golf 2013 2.0 TDI DSG
39-51 mpg

Volkswagen Golf 2013 2.0 TDI
47-58 mpg

Looks like DSG may be a big drain?

This is one of your problems - 5th gear at 30mph uphill - really?

Yes it's a diesel, but this must be at somewhere close to idle and the load figures must be through the roof

DSG is an automatic box ? So it must be a software / programming issue.

If at 30mph its probably best suited to 3rd, even more so with the modern tall gearing rubbish.

Honest john are from submitted figures so unless everyone with a DSG has a lead foot it should balance out.

Just checked mine today and I've averaged 46mpg over 3800 miles. 400 miles since last fill up and I put in 40 litres today.

If I had a lead foot I would not be doing 30mph!

I'm sure the tank is much smaller on the mk7 as they cost far less to fill up. I'd rather a bigger tank than a smaller one.

I am doing about the same but my Mk5 did 600 miles per tank with one gallon more!
