Mr Benson, so a ton of salt required. Still didn't think he was that cr@p.

Is it typical for BBC/Benson to report things as fact when they aren't confirmed? The headline isn't even in quotes, and the article even quotes Whitmarsh as saying "We haven't confirmed our driver line-up. We haven't signed contracts with drivers" confused

Possibly tied in with them not revealing their new title sponsor on 2 December as originally planned. The new sponsor is going to be announced at the car launch in 2014.

Looks like Perez's Telmex money hasn't been forthcoming.

They've just copied & pasted the BBC story. McLaren need to build a decent car before they think of juggling drivers.

Yes, very much so. To be fair the Beeb have rarely been wrong when announcing this type of scoop as fact, but still tabloid type journalism from a much relied upon news source that should (and generally do elsewhere) know better.

Joe Seward reported it on his blog before the BBC I think...

Got to feel sorry for Perez really, he has performed well IMO, often outperforming Jenson in terms of pace. I think mclaren suggesting his performances have been under par is a poor way of trying to cover up the fact mclaren have become a pay driver team to survive and they have made Perez a scapegoat. Being ditched by mclaren will probably be he nail in Perez f1 coffin, but I hope he finds a good drive elsewhere. Magnussen is a decent enough driver but there are many others I would have picked before him. Let's just hope he does a better job in f1 than his dad....

Pretty low risk option to be fair though. McLaren probably getting seed money next year to help their transition to Honda engines.
Perez hasn't delivered (some recent good drives but not stellar).

Magnusson won't be expensive and could be the next Lewis - their young driver programme is pretty good?

In summary an ultimately low risk move that is good for the sport.

I think I'm in a minority of one who, bearing in mind respective performances and cost, would have ditched Button rather than Perez.

Or ditched them both and signed Kimi/Hulkenberg & Magnussen.

I don't think Telmex were ever in the running as title sponsor. Beyond Claro Video we didn't see anything Mexican on the car. And as I heard some time ago, it seems, from what Whitmarsh was saying in the autosport report, they may not have just one title sponsor to replace Vodafone. Maybe that might mean that GSK may increase their sponsorship, or perhaps Suntory might like the tie-up with Honda and keep the Lucozade branding on the car?

Brave move with Magnussen, given the fk up his dad made with his chance.

Surely Perez potentially brings more of a budget than magnusson?

Martin Whitmarsh said the other day that McLaren have not given their drivers a good enough car this season and that under those circumstances Perez has been a great team member. Who would want to hear that just before you lose the drive? Makes you wonder what to believe around F1 these days. Only days ago Autosport said that Lotus backers had given the nod to Hulkenburg and yet the BBC are still saying it`s Maldonado?

All can be true. He might be a great team player, team guy, but missing a key 1%? Which was pretty much what happened at Ferrari! but they did it with a lot of respect to Massa in the end.

Lotus backers did back Hulk, but the money hasn't turned up yet as I understand it, they just have an opinion until the cash is in lotus, it's not their choice?

GSK are selling their drink brands and are concentrating on pure pharmaceutical products, so I doubt they have any need for sponsorship in F1 anymore

I was under the impression that teams had two individual teams buidling cars, and that next years call will be constructed by another part of Mclaren F1, therefore, there would be no reason to assume that next years cars would be be fast straight out of the box.
