When technology gets confused

I have a large oil painting to sell and took it into a local gallery to see if they could shift it for me. They had no space but suggested I approach another gallery - fine. The conversation then went:

Gallery: 'Have you got an iPad?'

Me (wondering what an iPad has to do with anything): 'Er, no...'.

Gallery: 'That's a pity. If you had an iPad you could take a photo of it'.

Me (hardly believing my ears): 'Well luckily I have a photographic studio upstairs so that should do it'.

Gallery: 'Ah well if you had an iPad you could e-mail the photo to them'.

Me (still hardly believing my ears): 'Well actually I can e-mail JPGs quite happily... all it needs is a camera...'


I'm just amazed that clearly the guy can use an iPad but not a camera!

Obviously, ipad is industry standard now, so we should all ditch our expensive DSLRs.

My first sight of an iPad was next door, when my gadget-mad neighbours held it up to the night sky and said 'Look, you can see the stars in it - amazing!'. I was thinking a sheet of glass would do it equally well

Yeah yeah, when I need one I'll get one. Big is good. Little is good. Medium-sized I'm not so sure about.

I was out in Canada a couple of weeks ago, photographing bears with a Canadian friend.

Him with a tripod mounted 1Dx, new 200-400 L, Wimberley head . . . and an ipad for general views.

He loves it, I think he's strange

I have 3 children and my most precious one is small and glass fronted, assembled in the China and designed by apple in California...

However, I took the two fleshy ones to Peppa Pig World, and the amount of idiots holding up ipads was amazing...!

I ask you, who the feck takes an ipad to a theme park!

I don't really care about looking stupid. If a picture presents itself I'll take the opportunity. Could be with my ipad, phone, lumix or dslr.

I don't get the number of guests who go to weddings with an iPad to take photos with, why would you want to carry around something that size all day?

the thing is. more often than not, those snapping away with an ipad will have an iphone in their pocket.

fair enough if you see something and the only thing to hand is your ipad, but in a world where the vast majority has a smartphone; that is rarely the case. especially amusing when you consider iphone usually has the better camera.

Also agree, I just wonder why anyone would bother taking anything more than a phone for those situations.....

The ipad is terrible - yes if sat of the settee and the kids do something funny, but even then it bugs me that I'm using it rather than having camera available...!

I find iPhones too fiddly for anything other than phone calls. the iPad mini still fits in a coat pocket and I can at least bloody see what I'm doing (Good for movies on planes too).

As we get quite a few power cuts in the part of the world, iPad is stuffed with MP4 movies, so we sit by a fire and watch one of them till power is back.

Used the camera once. Never used the video camera.

Ha, no. WiFi only on ipad. I've never put burning leaves in my mouth, though I once poked myself with a sharp farming implement.

Exactly. I use the ipad mainly at home if I'm sat on the settee to grab my daughter if she is doing something picture or video worthy.

I can only remember using it a couple of times out in public over the last couple of years.

Once was on holiday at a kids show when they grabbed my wife and little girl and pulled them up on stage. I just dropped out of Angry Birds into video mode.

I have to say I've had more trouble with people when using the 200mm 2.8.....

to be fair, if you have an app like sky view (I think), then looking at the stars and things becomes a bit more fun. It shows you the constellations, where the planets are, where satellites and the ISS are etc so you can more easily see what you're looking at and point things out and decipher stars from planets. All without a telescope.

My weekend in Beijing allowed me to capture these strange ipad wielding photographers in their natural habitat, it became so normal that I stopped taking photos of them looking incredible stupid after I got into double figures...
