Just looked for the first time in ages and they seem to have gone up a fair bit?

This, coming into winter too.

Did I miss some big write up or are they finally coming of age?

Good ones are getting thinner on the ground and those who specifically want a 928 will pay for a good one.

In other words, supply is getting closer to demand.

Scarcity is finally telling. GTs tend to sell very quickly if they are good cars with good history. Early cars are just rare full stop. The only autos that seem to move are early 4.5 cars with no spoilers and teledials or the last of the line GTSs. There is a huge spread on the latter, £10k-£20k.

Top tip would be early manuals (like mine!), GTs and manual GTS.

Manual GTS prices went wild a couple of years ago then seemed to drop. Agree, a manual GTS would be the way to go. A while back there was a grey GTS with 111K on the market, complete with grey sports seats ...... lovely. Was up for around 16K for ages, went for less than 12. I saw it for sale again last year at around 12k and it sold a lot quicker.

One of the cars I doubt I'll ever own, but wished I had. Only thing that really puts me off is the maintenance cost (if something went wrong with either the engine or maybe worse .... the electrics).

Def future classic.

I own the Silver GTS 5-spd that you mention... First time it sold, it went for £13k. I missed it by one hour... went out and bought a V10 M5 Touring instead. The second time I was not going to miss it and snapped it for a touch less than £13k... In that particular year, the previous owner put a total of 1100 miles on it.

It was Porsche's press car and featured in a few mags back in 1993, then in 1994 was acquired by Nigel West - MP and of spy thrillers' fame and was sold to the previous onwer, who "stole" it under my nose, in 2011. FSH from Porsche and Garage N5 in Acton, with a full engine rebuild in 2010 due to overheating - 8 new oversize pistons came to £4000 alone.

Since the car came into my ownership I have renewed the suspension with custom GAZ double adjustable coilovers, installed new engine mounts, addressed two minor paint issues, installed SS braded lines, GT cams, X-Pipe, re-mapped the ECU to take advanatge of the last two and re-foamed all speakers. The car deliberately is kept totally stock in appearance in almost every respect - I have allowed myself the liberty to replace the original headunit with a retro Pioner DEH-77MP, which fits the light grey interior of the 928 very well...

On top of the above work, all oil and fluids were replaced, including the messy 2yrs coolant and transaxle oil changes. The PSD fluid was bled and renewed, a full diagnostic test was also run.

Now mechanically and cosmetically she wants for nothing, all lights, buttons and switches work, including the Aircon, boot opening etc. The only thing left to do to make me really happy is clean the interior properly. The sports seats don't show any wear at all, but I keep getting these pangs of jealousy when I visit some threads on detailing world...

As to the value of the car - I guess if you want one of the 42 UK RHD GTS 5-spd cars ever registered, in a nice colour - Polar Silver - with Sports seats and pretty much issue free you would pay up. Knowing how much better this car is than equivalent MY 911 and the prices they are commanding now, I think it makes sense that values are slowly on the up...

Stick my head out and say that's almost good value.

Most of these cars are getting to the age where they'll need lots of work - that ad alone mentioned £10k worth of mech work. Justified further by a low mileage and top notch nick.

I will stick my neck above the parapet again...

If you want a 928 which wants for nothing you would have to pay... Most of the sub £10k cars want for something... Either paint, or AirCon, or will have the wrong wheels, or the interrior will be tatty etc.

While parts prices are OK, it is the labour time required to put the car right that is the real killer. Unlike modern cars, the 928 is not really designed to be taken apart. Most of the interior for example is held together by screws in the most bizzare of places. Instead of one V-belt, each anxillary has its own. The electrics are simple - there just a ton of them, and there is a curious mix of analogue and early digital. As there is no Can-Bus, diagnostic work is via a multi-meter - easy in principle, but time-costly in reality.

Lastly, given the plethora of modern cars in the sub £20k bracket, if you are looking at a 928, you are looking for a 928. Your £20k buyer knows what they want, and knows what they cost. These cars are not pitched at your "I want a cheap Porsche" buyer. Heck, £10k buys you a modern 996. Not necessarily better, but certainly with more street cudos if that's your thing. Thus, I think perhaps the 911 Virgin car is priced correctly. However, all of you missed the best "expensive" 928 out there - the Guards Red GT for sale at 4* Classics. That is the ONE, which will be worth the most in 10yrs time, and not the Auto cars...

Honestly I think the nearest modern equivalent to the 928gt or gts manual would be the AM V8 and that thing makes the Porsche look positively good value and cheap to run. A mate of mine had the AM, problems such as paint defects and worn out wiper mechs on an almost new low mileage car make even a 20 yr old Porsche in reasonable nick look tempting. Its all about perspective as there aren't many 'nice' front engined V8 coupe options out there.

Up to a point Lord Copper. Cars from 87 on had the diagnostic port which checks out the entire LH Jetronic system and a few other bits in a few minutes. I have the reader which plugs into this and very handy it is too

I think the BMW 840i Sport is another contender....and they seem to be on the up now,but look like good V8 value...!

Hmm, I think I have gone one step ahead of you and acquired a Hammer and a Sharktuner, thus I am well aware of the Jetronic capabilities to store faults. However, when the temp sensor goes on a 928S4 and your fans start making a 747 impression, you will need to get the multimeter out. Testing the fans' ECU is a lot of fun too. Getting an osciloscope out to diagnose the crank sensor is a pain...

On my BMWs, all I need to do is ask the OBD II/OBD III and the answer comes back to me on my laptop. I can monitor all sorts of live values, while the Hammer is limited at best... Heck, I can even lower the back of the car by just typing...

Speaking of BMWs - the 8-series was a rival, but it gets blown out of the water unless you are looking at 6-spd manual cars. The only one worth mentioning in the same sentence is the 850Csi and look at the prices that these command. The 840i Auto is a nice place to be, but it ain't a sports car. The 928's ability actually is way beyond what you would call a GT car...
