Removing silicon from bodywork

My S3 is currently fitted with some hideous wing mirrors that never stay in the right position, a while ago I purchased some mx5 mirrors so last night I removed one of the old mirrors for trial fitting before painting the new ones up. It transpires the old mirrors are from a Daewoo but worse still the person (let's call him Clown for now) used a nice layer of silicon instead of a rubber mounting pad for them which I need to remove. What's the best way to go about this as when I gently pulled at it last night it was clearly lifting the paint too

I'd thought about that but don't know if its also an effective paint remover too?
