Living in a bedsit, on the dole, out of cash, boiled an egg on the Baby Belling, then made Smash with the egg-boiling water, chopped the egg up into the Smash and ate it. Quite nice too, IIRC.

Wonder if this will get moved to the food forum?

Also, pasta cooked in water with a oxo cube or chicken stock cube - cheap and tasty

Cuppasoup works well, or if you're feeling flush make a white sauce and bung in an asparagus or mushroom cupasoup then pour over pasta. Used to do that quite often when I was a student.

Used to have pasta as a student. Just pasta, sometimes had butter on it if available.

Once had a brown bread sandwich. Slice of brown bread between two slices of white bread.

Never went without booze or drugs though, strangely.

Made a bread for a pan bake. The only sugar for the dried yeast was some stale, hardened Jellybabies melted in boiling water. Funny coloured yeast but it worked.

When I was a student up in Dundee back in 1989, sharing a flat with a Scotsman, Englishman and Irishman (but that's another thread...) I was pretty skint and decided to try tinned carrots on sandwiches.

I thought if I added enough HP sauce they would be OK...I was wrong and they were minging!
