Last Septembter my gf bought the Nikon P-510 Bridge Camera from a local camera shop who told us if we registered it on the Nikon website we'd get an additional 12 months warranty. Seems fair and well worth registering.

Anyway, earlier in the week it developed a fault and won't charge the battery inside the camera, however, the battery will charge in an external charger, so looks like the charging circuit is faulty in the camera.

Rang Nikon today and they are unwilling to honour the warranty even though we registered it because we failed to tick a specific check box at the time!

Lesson learned, even if you register your product with Nikon, make sure you click the little checkbox stating you'd like the 2 year warranty or you'll end up having to pay for any repairs.

Not happy after only 13 months of ownership!

I'm pretty sure that there's a clause in the Sale of Goods Act or somewhere similar that affirms a 24 month warranty from the seller.

I'm sure someone will be along at some point who is more au fait with it though.

Sneaky indeed. I doubt you have any recourse other than to kick up a fuss; it is certainly not in the spirit of the agreement and you were misled.

Yes Mike, I spoke to Trading Standards who tell me you can make a claim upto 6 years after the purchase and that it all boils down to what seems fair and reasonable, ie, is it reasonable for a camera to fail after (in my case) 13 months.

I guess the bigger the purchase, the longer seems fair and reasonable, ie a car for example.

Anyway, I've sent Nikon an email and spoken to the shop we bought it from, who are unimpressed with Nikons response.

Our 3 current cameras are all Nikon, DSLR, Compact and this Bridge. Never again though, just out of principal.

Did you receive a confirmation email from Nikon after you registered? or did you just presume it was registered!

Should have had the following text:

Dear Mr.,

Thank you for your custom and choosing Nikon, we can confirm that your item has now been successfully registered; please find enclosed your certificate for second year warranty cover.

Kind Regards,

Nikon UK Service Dept

I didn't presume it was registered, it is registered. If I log into my Nikon account via their website, it shows as being registered with the serial number and date of purchase. My bone of contention with Nikon is; the only benefit of registering is to gain the extended warranty. Nikon are saying even though I registered I didn't click a checkbox to receive the extra warranty.

To me, it's pedantic and shows a lack of customer service.

I've spoken to my local camera shop who sold me the camera and they have said they will deal with it but probably at their expense as Nikon have taken this approach in the past. So not only have Nikon let me down but they have let their reseller down who sells their products on a daily basis. Very short-sighted approach in my eyes, but then I am very customer service focused and expect high standards from global companies.

Since the camera shop had had this problem before maybe they should have said to you 'Don't forget to tick the box' - and thus got both of you off the hook.

It is very poor.

It is not in the spirit of the offer at the time of purchase.

It is also bks on the part of Nikon as regardless of what they may like to do, they are governed by the sale of goods act which requires Nikon to rectify defects after their notional 1-year warranty period, regardless of what they would like to tell you.
