Hi all, just after some advice and encouragement to be honest. Starting to feel the fear about a marathon I'm running in Feb. Feel like I'm behind with the training and looking to see if it's possible to get back on track and finish in a reasonable time. Running 5-6 miles three times a week and going to start with the long runs this weekend. Is three months enough to get marathon fit?

Yes.
Download a training plan.
Stick it on Excel and frig with it to make it fit the 3 months you have.
Don't bother following it religiously - but don't neglect it either.
Above all work out how you're going to peak at 20 miles a month before the marathon and start ramping up your weekly long run.

Well I did the Malta Marathon on Sunday..!

Didn't stick to a training plan religiously, to be honest the longest run I had done beforehand was around 15 miles. I was at the 30km point at 3 hours and for twenty minutes or so I got it into my head that a sub 4hour time would be on the cards. Didn't hit 'the wall' or at least I didn't experience anything like what I thought it would be, but I had to slow my pace right down for the last 10k and ended up finishing just over 4:30. More than anything I am very happy that I completed within the 5hr cutoff and got my medal!

Shot Blox and High5 gels are recommended!

Next step for me is to keep up the running but not overdo it; got a few 10ks this year, maybe a half marathon, then next year go back and get under 4 hours.

Also looking to get back into circuits and start some cross fit type workouts.

ETA: It was very enjoyable and I would recommend it to anyone!

Well done, bud. You did well to hang in there and 4.5 hours is bang in the middle of where most people finish a marathon.

Do come and join us in the Running Thread over in Sports.

Bloody Hell are we Twins :-) - just been through exactly the same experience - did the Singapore Marathon in December and did 10 weeks training - now about to start CrossFit and doing an Urbanathlon on Sunday. Good effort by the way on your first marathon, good achievement.

I started CrossFit about 3 months ago - I found it has massively helped my running, in particular my pace has increased a lot on my on my "slow runs", which I run as a specific heart rate.
