So,

I've been without the 997 for a week.

Already thinking about replacing it with a Boxster 987!

Long story short, now have a longer commute and just didn't have the spare time to drive the 911, but an older (cheaper, higher miler 987) should make for an enjoyable winter commuter!

How are prices looking at the moment for early 2.7 & 3.2s'.....?

Are good ones changing hands from around the £8k mark (trade?)

Looks like £10ish buys a good private - history, 50k miles, works done?

Any recent experiences?

Or good cars for sale?

Cheers,

the 2.7 987 is a sweet motor, plenty of power for anything other than drag racing, lovely handling, and very economical - driven hard will still see above 20mpg, and a gently 80mph run will return 35mpg+
Go for the pre March 2006 to avoid £500 a year tax
Be picky on the spec you want as it won't be worth adding anything at that price. Heated seats an absolute must for winter use

Agreed.

None fitted to my Spyder and I've driven that roof down at an indicated -12 degrees. Heater is fine.

Agree...I didn't have heated seats in mine when I spec'd it. No such thing as cold weather...just inappropriate clothing.

Thought that was only the first year when new!
Thereafter 240-280, dependant on engine size?

Anything after 23 March 2006 with >225 gr will have an annual road tax of £475. If registered before that date the max will be £280.

Never used the heated seats in mine in the 4 years I've owned it. Don't believe in drying out the leather anymore than it is already, plus I sweat like a FAT PIG even in sub zero temperatures with the roof down.

You can use an electric blanket or hot water bottle if you really need to keep your ass hot.

Maybe on the later ones but the earlier 987S is about 250g/km so goes into the £475 bracket unless registered before March 2006.

It was a nice, but not essential, benefit when I bought my 987S at 5 years old, but now the early cars are 8 years old with prices to match it is more essential. I don't really want to pay £500 a year to tax a car worth not much more than £10k!

Absolutely, just too much on a 10K car!

Many 2.7s are as fast as the Ss, gotta try a few out, thinking about a 2.7 myself to compliment the 911 next year, just bricking it about the engine going bang!

i had a 2.7 987 (56 plate) from new and it was fab. in my top three of best cars i have had. . .cobalt blue, metroplole leather, xennons, etc etc lovley. never let me down, took it Tignes Skiing, got snow chains for it, caused a bit of a stir amongst the barges in Tignes high street when we arrived, but proved to be frugal and fun, all it needed at 40,000 miles was discs and pads at the front and pads at the back, all easy stuff to do so i did the work and saved a bit there. Didnt have the heated seats though, which might have been nice. would have another in a shot. . .but then maybe a Cayman. . .doh decisions

i was lucky , it was very dark when we got there, and slightly drunk German was so suprised to see a Porsche he offered to fit the snow chains ! we had only stopped as the pizza delivery van was struggling with the incline that there is on Tignes high street one way system, we had to stop and that was it ! we were spinning wheels when he came out of the bar and on a very cold night got to work !!!
A top holiday memory, and the car was more than up for the trip, so dont be timid with yours if you get the chance to go

2.7's are such great wee cars, particularly for the moolah they are these days. Very fond memories of my last 2.7. I found that the 2.7 sounded even better, a bit more gutteral, than the 3.2. Full leather on the dash and doors is worth seeking out I'd say. And the smaller chunkier tyres give them a bit of a retro look I thought, aswell as a lighter / nimbler feel when hoofing on.

I may be blinkered but having commuted by 986 for 11 years (every working day with the exception of an 18 month spell when my commute was a 160mile round trip and I had a season ticket on the train but I still managed to take the car a handful of times each month 'for business purposes' wink ) I honestly can't think of one compelling reason why I might consider an early 987 over a late 986 if I needed to replace mine.

If the OP's objective is find a fun winter commuter then clearly both will perform admirably on the right tyres. The glass window top on the later 986s is a clear benefit IMO and I am firmly in the yes camp on the hotly debated topic of seats! The 987 is presumably marginally better on fuel and may have other cost advantanges in terms of servicing/tax etc. but to get these benefits you have to give up some of the purity of the original 986 design... and you may have to pay more (assuming like for like a leggy well serviced 987 still commands a premium over a leggy well serviced 986?).

The OP doesn't appear to be looking for a minter but I would like to see what mint examples of both are going for as I would assume that the 986 will begin to edge ahead?

I'm sure that the OP know that one area where both fall down in winter for those without access to a garage is that of ice on the door-skin-to-window-glass seals. Water gets in here and freezes bonding the glass to the seal preventing the window drop. When its really cold, sliding-in a plastic credit card or similar is difficult and pouring warm water works but can lead to further problems... I don't remember it being a particular issue from new so could it be that the 'flocked' inner surface of these seals has some water repellent characteristics that wears off and ultimately acts as a moisture trap?

I see that you can buy these seals nowadays but they aint cheap and I don't know how involved the procedure is to fit them.

Yes it seams a daft thing to say but just from experience, even been in 2.5s that feel as fast as the S.
It's not a general statement I was making and not trying to offend anyone with an S as the opposite can also be true.
Just mean its worth driving a few to feel the difference smile
