Some (long!) while ago, a bunch of us joined a group buy for an oil thermostat to help cure the cold winter running that the Cerb can sometimes suffer from.

For one reason or another, I haven't yet fitted mine, and I wondered whether anyone who has fitted theirs can give some guidance on where they fastened it, and any issues they had when fitting?

Thanks in advance!! biggrin

Oh, and yes, I may finally get around to sorting mine...

I fitted a mocal one. I had all intensions of using the proper bracket etc but when fitted I had to cable tie it to the chassis. Works perfectly fine. The bracket it come with wouldn't fit and haven't gotten round to making one. You can get the sandwich plate ones which you wouldn't have to mount

Mine was made harder as the oil hoses are stubborn things to move.

Thanks, Peter.

I already recognise oil pipework as stubborn swines, and that's part of why I am hoping to see where others have mounted theirs - it will help me get the pipework measured up.

Taking my lead from the water thermostat, is it better to fit the bypass closer to the engine or closer to the cooler? I am assuming closer to the cooler?

Mine is about half way. Was more down to space of where to mount it. Mine is on the first cross rail in front of the engine.

Fitting into the hoses can be awkward as on mine one of the pipe stubs over sized and the oil pipe is very stiff - have to tickle it a bit with a belt grinder

also cutting the hoses can't relaly be done with a hacksaw

a really big pair on tin snips is the best thing

I had new hoses made up when I done mine.

When I have to cut hydraulic hose at work hack saw then wire cutters for the reinforcing wires. Then hack saw for the internal hose. Can be cleaned up with a blade

An angle grinder / disc cutter makes easy work of cutting wire reinforced hydraulic hoses!

Thanks, chaps!

I had originally resigned myself to new hoses, which I don't consider a great investment, particularly since any buyer may wish to return it to original spec.

Did any of you "bolt" the thermostat or have you all used cable ties?

Anyone have problems not being able to cool the oil enough, on track of course? What size is the standard cooler?

First time in the cerb today for a while so general driving traffic etc.

Thought i would add some info from my run.

9 degrees outside temp

Oil temp on arriving at home.

Water temp, although when i saw Joolz he mentioned that the gauge was under reading by about 10 degrees. Yet to confirm this with a temp probe and engine diagnostics.

It's frightening how low the oil temp reads even with the oil stat!

Imagine where it would be without it!

I don't have an oil stat but I have a piece of cardboard that is wrapped in insulation tape. I put this between the oil cooler and the body to restrict air flow to the cooler in these conditions.

Works a treat and warms the car up much quicker. When not needed, I chuck it back in the boot.
