help please stripping off chrome from plastic parts

Hi all " how do you strip off the chrome that you find on Tamia etc... parts that come with a model so I can repaint with something a little less bright without damaging some of the small fine parts?

I've used bleach in an old margarine tub. Leave it overnight and all the chrome's gone.

Bleach, brake fluid, Mr Muscle oven cleaner, full fat Coke are just some of the options.
