How to open the fuel cap?

2013 BMW 5 series diesel. Does anyone know before I spend an hour in the car fiddling with buttons and the iDrive system?

Haha, one of those classic oversights! I always struggle when trying to find the bonnet release in unfamiliar cars... Finding a black release handle in a shadowy footwell isn't easy.

My classic, you can always tell when I'm in a hire car when I go to fill up. I, without fail, always forget to check what side the filler cap's on... laugh

Have a look on the dashboard, many new cars give you a clue.

Most fuel places have hoses long enough to reach over ( unless you're in something like a Transit).

Mercedes C-class courtesy car.

Sat in traffic and curiosity gets the better of me so I try the pedal operated handbrake, traffic starts moving but can I work out how to release the handbrake!?! All I achieved was making it tighter so there was no chance of moving the car and panic set in, who knows why they thought it was a good idea to have a separate release handle.

My mate bought a mk3 mx5 which, like all mx5's, has the fuel cap lever in the centre console so couldn't find it. He ended up sitting at the fuel pump in the car googling where it was. What would we do without smart phone eh! wink

Lol! Reminds me of when I was asked to move someones S500 only 50 yards or so. For the mother of god I could not work the thing out, and don't think I ever released/applied it properly.

The best rental "handover" I had was for a Mondeo in Woking, when the Mondeo had just first come out (about 1992).

The guy had quite a dry sense of humour as we did the paperwork, then he said "I'll just show you round the vehicle" but by this time it was raining, so we both sat inside.

"Here's the indicators .... like this ... horn ... like this ... lights - you'll be needing those sir, like this .... here's the wipers - you'll be needing those sir ... like this ... sunroof - oh, you won't be needing that, ..... electric wind--- oh, you won't be needing those either will you sir biggrin, ... [then he pointed to the steering wheel] In there is an airbag sir, but you won't be needing that will you sir?
