Right i have just bought the wife a new Vauxhall Adam and i already have an old 53 plate Zafira on which the insurance renewal is due. The wife has just passed her test and i have 10 years no claims. Whats the best (cheapest) way to get us both insured on both cars. I have never had to do this before as she never drove and i'm not sure whats legal and what i'snt!

Cheers

Myself and the wife are with DirectLine at the moment and named drivers on each other's policies. That's working out really cheap for us both so it might be worth giving them a bell. I assume it's the "Is anyone else in your household insured under a Direct Line Policy?" answer that's key to that.

What legalities are you worrying about?
You may find that in this case, with your wife being a new driver, insuring both vehicles totally separately with each of you as named drivers on the others insurance might be the easiest and cheapest method.

I thought i could insure her new car on my 10 years no claims and have her as a named driver on it but apparently i cant. It has pushed the premium up by nearly £400

Just tried Admiral multi car there. Nearly 1500 quid compared to 750 with two different companies on confused.com Probably pushed the price up cause she has just passed her test! Cheers lads

Insuring her car in your name with her as a named driver is called 'fronting'. Basically the insurer wants the main driver to be described as such. You can however do this with some companies as long as you describe your wife as the main driver.

The only issue would be 'insurable interest' but as you are married, insurers see you as a single entity (what's mine is yours and all that!) so that isn't an issue.

Compare, compare, compare. And then post results!!!

Are you doing the quote for your wife's car with her as the main driver or you?
Can't help much except for trying all the comparison sites as you are already doing no doubt, and try the ones that aren't on there, I think they are Direct Line (worked out cheapest for me in October) and Aviva from memory but there may be others.

Fully comp is often cheaper than the other two but not always as well

Worth a mention too that EUI (Admiral, Elephant, Diamond) do what they call a 10 month 'bonus builder'. Not the cheapest sometimes but you get a full 1 years No Claims Bonus in just a 10 month policy. Useful for new drivers who are chasing their first load of NCB.
