pistonheads SEARCH not working for ages now

It's funny this recurs on such a regular basis. The link that says "Search" works just fine, and allows you to find things on PH.
It may not be quite as focussed as Ted's old engine, but the forum outgrew that a long time ago, and tools that would produce similar results are ridiculously expensive for internet-focussed use, given the back end design.

well I have to say that the search system "google" stinks its no way as good as the old system ! not enough info on specific car issues etc
the old system would give you all the threads/topics on years gone by where car pistonheaders have had issues / problems and
members giving good advise on how to fix problems with our cars
sorry but I cant see why a pistonheads search cant be brought back like the good old days

O and the amount of time this has been raised, and still nothing gets done, no one at PH towers gives a fk
Seriously the op is spot on, the old PH search engine was one of the best points about this place, the current system is a pale shadow of itself, and whilst a lot say just use Google and add pistonheads to the tag line, its a workaround, that just doesn't cut it.

Allow me to explain.
The forum has too many posts to efficiently search in a timely fashion on our SQL databases.
Running these searches on the database had the result of the ASP page that serves the results timing out before the search results came back. The query would continue to run on the server tieing up a query thread.
Your page times out so naturally you refresh it. Now we've got half the threads occupied and so on.
When the forum was really slow? That was largely caused by the search function.
We've investigated a few ways to improve things and a ground up redesign of the back end of the forum would be the ideal.
However that's no easy task. By any stretch of the imagination.
I can assure you however that it is on the list of things to do.

Personally I've found Google's indexing of PH to be ideal.
I often see a PH topic as the top result in entirely unrelated queries.

over the years which gave us car owners that special information that someone had posted up to help others in fixing/advise on there cars
don't get me wrong the google gives us a portion of information which sometimes is enough but the old search gave us every post going back years
which means on specific cars you can find information which you wont find elsewhere

I have a practical question regarding the search function: I want to retrieve the topics on seat-belts in the Chimaera section.
When I type seat belt under the search functions, it looks for the key word in the entire Pistonheads' forum instead of focusing on Chimeara only.
Is there a way to narrow-down the scope of the Google search function?
