Had my S3 up for sale a few weeks and had the first viewing tonight. Chap had been in contact a few times but he could only view the car late evenings due to work hours (company director)

Asked to meet me halfway between his house and mine, so I arrived and waited for arrival. He turned up and went through basics, checked everything worked (it does, the car is in top order) but seemed disappointed it only had normal Satnav and not touchscreen. (2007 S3) told him I didn't think it was an option with the age of the car. Plus no cruise control seemed to disappoint him.

Asked for a test drive (him driving) and kinda put me in the spot so I said ok. Set off onto motorway (to check performance)
Did about 3 junctions up! (12 miles) and came back (12 miles) hit the limiter twice (to check it was a soft cut apparently) and touched over a 100 leptons.

Arrived back at rendezvous point, checked under bonnet, paperwork, bills (took photos) then said he had already seen 2, had 2 more to view over weekend then would decide which one was best and commence price discussion with the lucky winner(mines already cheap for condition)

Used a fair bit of fuel although he did offer a fiver for my trouble.

Just wondered is this de rigueur now or am I a chump?

You're not a chump but the buyer was taking a bit of a liberty in my opinion. If he'd crashed your car or got pulled whilst test driving it, you'd have a lot of explaining to do. Chalk it up and don't do it again.

Itd have been nice to land it there and then, but it was a reasonable test drive. Had you refused the test drive then I wouldnt have proceeded, but havbing the test drive cant oblige you to buy.

He seems less impulsive than many buyers but with the usual unrealistc expectations. You might hear from him yet...

It's a first for me but I did feel a bit stupid after.

If I'm test driving a car it's because I intend buying it if all is ok....not conducting an x factor style audition for the ultimate example at the lowest price by method of practical elimination.

That's a bit of a pee take on the limiter and ton up.

Did he show he had insurance?, I refused a test drive to a guy looking at my r32. I had told him to bring proof of insurance but he didn't. He still bought the car.

You were a chump. He should have come over to your house. You come over as a desperate seller

If he couldn't make it in the week there's always weekends. A fiver is an insult, he would have been better off offering nothing.

Also very unwise letting a complete stranger drive your car at 100mph.

Sorry, but you did ask.

Obviously as he was driving I was pretty stuffed. I did comment that he'd driven the car harder in half an hour than I had since owning it. (hence his checking soft cut limiter comment)

I'm I bit disappointed in myself for not being stricter tbh.

Plus I feel like I've wasted 2 hours polishing the car and 1/4 of a tank of petrol.

Isnt everyone who elects not to buy your car at your asking price a timewaster/tyre kicker/test pilot etc?

Ironically I'm not desperate to sell as I do like the car.
However I do like to help people out when I can so clearly I've been taken advantage of a fair bit.

Getting up to 100mph is dead easy, hitting the limiter in someone else's car is just plain rude imho.

Offering a fiver is also an insult. Not saying I would expect anything, but offering a fiver is just a bit weird.

However, you're selling a car and folk out there are strange, so you bite your lip and get on with it.

Yeah I will do. The limiter bit is what got to me. I could almost let the rest slide.

Exactly.

At the end of the day I sold my last car to someone who wanted to fit a body kit to it, and wanted me to meet him at the bodyshop so he could get a quote.
What had it got to do with me what he did with it when he had bought it?
But I was selling a car so I took and hour out and met him there and he bought it.

No harm done in this instance but learn from this experience.

Always negotiate anything when selling or buying from a position of strength, be it a house/ car whatever.

The fact that you agreed to meet him halfway weakened your position straight away. Also, never agree to wait in for anyone coming to view your car.....a good percentage of punters never turn up anyway...arrange a time when you would be at home ANYWAY, so if they don't show you have not wasted any time.

Under no circumstances let anyone drive your car unless they can show you a valid up to date certificate of comprehensive insurance.

All common sense (imo) learnt from bitter experience of selling cars and motorcycles privately for many years.

Good luck with your sale....smile
