Seems like a workable config for any manufacturers wanting to exploit/ pay homage to their F1 involvement... anyone know of any plans by those involved?

What could or would you like to see it in? F1 renaultsport clio? Or an Exige? Hot honda of some sort maybe?

Or is it too "niche" in a world where it seems there's only a few engines in production, just shared out across multiple platforms/manufacturers and "states of tune"!

Short answer... no.

Too many moving parts = lost efficiancy.

Small displacement turbos are crap anyhow, so no big loss.

Smaller capacity turbos with perhaps some of the tech - yes

V6? - no

I expect the batteries/KERS/hybrid tech to be exploited more in road cars than the engine.

Maybe 800cc 3 pot turbos - a twin is probably a bit unrefined. But the sweet spot for 1.6 in a road application is four cylinders.

Be cheaper to add displacement, lower rev limit and make the engine from cheaper materials.. Whilst you're at it make it an inline - V engines are quite wide so you need lots of space to get them in.

I would predict as many 1.6 V6 turbo-inspired engines as there were 2.4 V8-inspired engines.

I guess we'll see turbochargers in sports cars optimistically branded as "F1 technology" in the same way that automated clutched gearboxes and (more recently) hybrid systems have been. They wnot be 1.6 V6s, though.

F1 engines are required to only last 5000km before replacement so one would assume the tech is unfeasible for the real world.

'Big' 3 litre V12.. yes but 1.6 V6 turbo... nah... unless its those 1500hp specials.

Save the science classes, I know it's not the most boringly optimised or sensible engine you can build, I know sales of german 4 pot diesels in resale colours will not be threatened... My point was more the V6 is in the window of possibility compared with past F1 engine configs, might it just tempt someone wanting to give a car a bit of a twist?

cheaper and easier to do an inline though.

No, but we will continue to see lots of small-capacity turbo charged petrol engines, along the lines of the Ford EcoBoost 3-pot, from all manufacturers.
My neighour is an engine tech at Ruesselsheim and is pretty excited about the new SIDI three-pot.

Yes, so long as you're happy to buy a car which will have a knackered engine after just 1,000 miles. smile
