I have had some further suggestions made about fettling Pearl a little more, to the tune of an additional 50 BHP . Whilst she will then boast approximately 520 Horses I am concerned about the extra heat that will be generated. What does the panel think is the best way to keep her cool?

My first thought was a V12 bonnet, don't want to do that . I prefer Pearl to keep her V8 identity.
Remove the layer of insulation under the bonnet. Might do that anyway though the benefit must be limited.
Have some slats cut into the bonnet. That is a No No. Pearl must remain discreet at all times. I wish her to maintain her sleeper status.

Sensible suggestions only please wink

Rob, not sure how serious you are but Pearl is not exactly discreet, she has a space cannon for an exhaust note smile.
Not to mention, any remaining discretion being lost when you emerge tongue out.

What are the extra mods you are failing not to tell Molly about?

Could the people discussing the further fettling not suggest how the heat can be dissipated? I'm assuming BR so would also assume they'd know best how to achieve that.

Won't Mikeyk have that kind of of horsepower? How is the heat being dealt with?

Whatever you do, please don't make it any more noisy!

There would not be an appreciable amount of extra heat produced and as the stock cooling system is perfectly able to dissipate sufficient heat, you should not encounter any problems.

I would not remove the sound insulation under the bonnet as this will not be making any difference anyway to the underhood temperatures and will protect the thin skin of the hood, and hence the paint, from excessive thermal loads. If you really wish to reduce underhood temps, then wrap the exhaust headers with insulation, such as Thermo-Tec exhaust wrap and this will not only significantly reduce heat soak, but will improve exhaust gas scavenging and could further improve power.

You can also increase the efficiency of the cooling system if you so desired with a performance coolant, such as the "water wetter" that inproces thermal conductivity between the coolant and the radiator.

I really wouldn't recommend wrapping exhausts. This can cause corrosion which can't be seen or dealt with under the wrap. Look at the Nimbus product range. A much more sensible approach. I've used it on many cars with seriously upgraded horsepower and the stuff is untouchable.

Question 1. Do you have a heat problem?

The use of ceramic coatings in some equipment to ensure thermal insulation, such as exhausts is easily done. Reducing the heat radiating from the big heat source is the quick kill.
There are some new materials that you can replace or supplement the original Aston supplied materials with.
However I would first refer you to question 1.
If the answer is yes, I'll suggest some interesting solutions.

yes

part of the reason I went for the pinnacle ceramic coated exhausts
Messing with the cooling air flow through a car is not something to "dabble" with wink

8 Tech, I'm always interested in trying to cool down that thermonuclear reactor that we have under bonnet, do you have any experience with this product? Do you know if it works or is it a bit of a, "try on", and, "may", reduce cooling.

Having said that, if it did work and did induce further cooling, would this not be negated by the thermostat, in that it would get cooler and therefore the thermostat would start to close up?

Is there a Thermostat that begins to open sooner and stays open more, in effect running at a lower temp....?

I understand the need for more power.
However now I have upgraded to a DBS there is enough power for me.
Tonight I really planted the car on open roads and you get pinned to the seat when using all the range, change gear and your chucked back in your seat, change again then look at the speedo eek I mostly go from fourth into sixth as you really can't use anymore power on the road.
So the new models have 50 bhp more but I can't see how you can use that safely or legally.
I do press on in this car don't get me wrong but im just saying there can be too much smile

Rob have you driven a V12?

Hi Mav,

Yes, I have and do use it in a supercharged 5.6 V12 BMW with no other cooling system mods apart from a smaller waterpump pulley to increase coolant flow rate.

It works the same as "Shower Shine", reducing the surface tension and giving better thermal conductivity between the coolant and the surfaces it touches, both in removing the heat from the engine and dissipating it into the radiator.

The thermostat is temperature fixed so it will not affect its operation at all. The thermostat is the ultimate controller of the coolant operating temperature so unless your coolant temperature continues to increase, despite a fully open thermostat, then you do not have a cooling system issue in any case.

The point I tried (but clearly unsuccessfully) to make in my original response.

Hope that helps,

8Tech.

I keep reading about how the aston is underpowered compared to its rivals (vanquish vs f12 ,dbs vs 599 etc) yet never once have I thought'this needs more power' ,the opportunities to use 510bhp on public roads is so limited .

Only 520 bhp? Oh how awful! How do you manage?

You need to see Rachael again. She will tempt you with a more suitable Vantage.
565bhp, 0 to 60mph in 3.9 secs, top 205 mph.

I will just have to live with my 420 bhp.
0 to "You're Nicked" in 6 secs. smile

Hi,
could not see any mention of compatibilty of the water wetter with the OAT coolant used in our cars.

Good point SS972, any thoughts on that 8Tech?

I can't see any real problems, that Coolant stuff we use is pretty enviro unfriendly anyway, would they conflict? smile

I read the thread and missed this gem, so damned obvious. the V12 drive belt tensioner (of which I have just put a new one on) is as powerful as can be, and if the water pump (of which I have just put a new one on) were made to run, just a bit faster, that might add to the efficiency of the coolant system.

Where do you get the revised smaller pully from....... smile
