Motor Racing fatalities in the 60s

Watching a DUKE DVD documenting Jim Clark's career. The programme shows some excellent footage from places like Goodwood, Spa, Zandvoort etc. but what catches the eye is the proximity of random photographers scattered around the tracks. So often on sees comings together at the start of races and yet the grass sides of the start lines are dotted with photographers. In other scenes one sees them hunkered down on the outside of what look like high speed corners. There must have been fatalities but these are never spoken of. Or, was it not actually as dangerous as it looked? Anyone remember, I was born in '56 so although I avidly watched and read about motor racing I wouldn't have noticed details like this.

Kind of tallies with what I suspected, incidentally this is a great DVD !

Ditto. In any case there wasn't the same attitude as today -"someone is to blame, someone has to pay". All snappers accepted the risk, and wouldn't have expected compo. It's quite feasible that the media wouldn't have reported it anyway.So soon after WW2, one death would have meant nothing.
