spotted this today:

which got me thinking, people are always banging on about cars getting more and more expensive, so i googled what £19k in todays money is, which is £30k. so in 18 years cars haven't really gone up if you compare the fiat coupe to the GT86.

so stop ya moaning £30k for a golf indeed.

Inflation just doesn't work for cars, considering how more complex they are nowadays.

What was the disposible income as a perentage of the car purchase back in the old days.

Average salary in 1976 was 3744 (info here http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/3519662.stm)

Car was therefore 99% of salary

Average salary in 2012 was 26500 (info here http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-20442666)

Golf GTi in 2013 is 26125 (slightly up on 2012)

Considering the VAT rate in 76 (from April) was 12.5% it's not too bad.
Add in the fact that 3744 in todays money is just over 22k and both cars and salary have increased.
