I had a good look around at the Classic Car show, and my ( very dim ) memory was right for once, it was the Austin / Morris 1100/ 1300 cars that used a similar stay, albeit not stainless. My wife had a Wolseley variant of that type many years ago.
I knew I'd seen that strut before somewhere.

Hi Glen.
Not had a chance to look at the roof options, retire at the end of December so there will be more time to do things through the day, I think it would be a mixture of the rear piece that bolts to the body (from the existing roof) and a MX5 soft top, the place I think would be a problem is where the window meets the roof as the Mazda windows have a rounded edge, not really bothered if it is a none starter as I think I can get them in the boot by just laying them on top of the tank. It's the spare wheel I don't know what to do about.

I think the spare will have to go in the trailer Alan.
No room under the bonnet, you don't want to mount it on top of the boot, it would ruin the spoiler operation, you can't bung it on top of the roof Safari style because most of the time the roof will be off.
There are no running boards to mount it 1920's gangster style, and I don't think there's room behind the seats.
If it won't fit flat in the boot, the only option is the aerosol puncture repair cans, which are ok as long as you only get a small puncture.
You could have a support vehicle, but I can't think of anything that will be able to keep up with you apart from a Bugatti Veyron!

Yeah, but where would you put it?
Just a thought on the roof, did you know that a company makes a folding "Surrey" roof that replaces the targa panels on the S ?
I think it's Steve Top Gear TVR who has one.
Pricey but very effective & a good tight fit.
I'm sure he'll be pleased to supply details, either on here, or if you PM him.
