Ok,
First long trip since buying Trev 2 weeks ago, Reading to various parts of Devon and Cornwall visiting family and all seems well.... even averaging 32mpg on the return leg at a sensible 80 all the way.
After some motorwaying the idle speed would pick up a little when stopping, but sitting for a few seconds would see her return to normal (perhaps ill leave the stepper until it goes mad one day).
One issue we have though...... I was pretty cold the entire journey, not because the heaters dont work, but because they point the wrong way. I seem to get a dribble of warmth onto my legs, with a slight flow of cold through various dash buttons... but the poor missus got a 10 thousand degree flow of air into her side if the fan was even on its lowest setting.
She tried taking various garments off, but if i asked for the slightest bit of hot air, it resulted in an unhappy response. I thought better of it and resorted to being cold considering i was allowed the car in the first place.
Is this normal? has a pipe come off somewhere?, or TVR's idea of getting girls to strip off in the passenger seat?
p.s. Family loved it...... the usual 'it goes a bit' was the response.

Mine tends to be the same. The post facelift cars have a set of central vents just in front of the gear stick, which the early cars like mine (and yours by the look of it) do not have. The only heated vent on the drivers side is the one by your left knee and as you have found it is not the best - if you partially or fully shut off the passenger side vent you should find it improves the warmth of your knee marginally!
I might look into retro fitting a central vent at some stage, until then layers required!

If its doing 32mpg then perhaps you forgot to sart the engine?
32MPG? You'll have Daz getting jealous!
Ha, 32MPG? You'll have Daz getting jealous!
After showing the family what she could do a couple of times, we only got 24 mpg > the missus, who had finally cooled down after the journey down.... had 'one of those' faces...
a bit more cheery on the return leg with the 32 mpg thank god
On the early cars there are outlets for the air flow on both sides but the majority comes out of the passenger side. If you have the ability to fold yourself into small places, check the adjustment of your heater valve. it might not be properly closing.
Also, where the drivers side is a lot cooler, my money would be on cold air getting into the car. There is often a small gap in the corner of the door seal, plus if you pull back the carpets at the inside of the inner sill, you will find several reasonable sized holes. These let a lot of cold air into the car. Cover with lots of duck tape and put the carpets back!

Seriously, if your other half is going to be unhappy about the MPG then FFS just sell it now. After showing the family what she could do a couple of times, we only got 24 mpg > the missus, who had finally cooled down after the journey down.... had 'one of those' faces...

I have had my 4.0 for 6 years (or is it seven?) and have never bettered 22mpg and never worse than 16.
I cannot imagine even a 4.0 doing a genuine brim to brim 32mpg. If it is then its running v lean!

Mine only raised her eyebrows when I told her how much fuel I used on a track day. Two tanks before lunchtime, and 9 mpg, had me recovering her eyebrows from the back of her neck I have had my 4.0 for 6 years (or is it seven?) and have never bettered 22mpg and never worse than 16.

Mine's a 97 4.0 and passenger side is very hot (so i'm told) the two center ones give good heat keeping the gear knob warm and find my hand usually stays floating around gear knob and the bit of carpet area lower of the fans.
Driver side is poor and am always thinking it's switched to the closed position and with fiddling around i convince myself it got a bit more heat.
Fuel.... Best I've had so far 26.1 mpg coming back from Blackpool Back home event 150 miles of motorway 75mph and 135 miles of everyday driving (285 mile range) but like others 22-23 is the normal for mine 220-240 mile range 48-50 lts . But who cares how many it does
when your behind the wheel.

when your behind the wheel. If you stick your head in the footwell you should find a round louvre vent, the passenger side one is underneath the dash pointing downwards and the drivers side is on the transmission tunnel, it sounds like hers is open and yours is closed. Personally with the whole stripping off thing I would leave it that way!
Been with Piston heads now for 5 days>
What ive learnt so far:
People like the idea of girls stripping (this is good)
People have loads of advice (This is good)
Mention something and people get you worried (this is bad)
e.g. Congratulating myself on 32 mpg out of a 4 litre, and everyone else saying no chance..... has me worried about how rich the engine is now... aggggg... U buggers!
Great fun though

Spot on.
But on the whole the warning advice stops you unintentionally doing hundreds or even thousands of pounds worth of damage.
It never occurred to me that you could break the engine on track days due to oil starvation, caused by hard braking or hard cornering. Some wise soul spotted the risks and we are now having a full and detailed discussion to iron out the most effective and cost effective solution to the problem. Even a good friend of mine, who I would normally back to be the fount of all knowledge on track day requirements, has joined in the discussion and revised his views on how to solve the problem.
You learn so much on PH if you take the time to read and join in.
