To be honest, there's not a lot in it between the models. Ive got an HD Hero 2 and its as good as the 3+. Only difference is that the new ones have integrated wifi, have dive lense as standard and are fractionally smaller. Battery life is better In the hero 2 imho. No difference in picture quality between the models.

For wifi, extended battery, lcd viewfinder etc I bought the backpacks. GoPro app is excellent too. Top bit of kit and highly recommended.

My brother has the GoPro 2, it's very good.

Check out the Garmin VIRB though, they do 2 versions, the VIRB and the VIRB Elite. The Elite has GPS, altimeter and wifi built in. Both models have an LCD display and they're both waterproof without the need for an additional case you. It's well worth looking at, I can give you a price if you decide you want one.

Yes and no. The latest Go Pro 'black edition' is the elite of the affordable on car cameras and blows away the competition. The resolution is higher and the light sensitivity better than previous models. The next step up is to spend thousands of pounds on a bullet cam with separate recorder or radio link, as used on the F1(I've used both). I'm guessing that would be overkill for your purposes, as would the black edition. As Ecain says there's not a lot in it; there is, but not at the level you're using it. For the purposes of youtube clips and home viewing any of the models will do. I still have one of the first HD models, low light performance isn't as good as later models but in daylight the pictures are still awesome. So I'd say pick up an older model at a knock down price.
