Buy high, sell low, lunch is for wimps etc...

A quick heads up for anyone who doesn't venture over to the share tips thread in finance. We have organised a little competition to see how much each of us can win (or lose) before the market closes for Christmas. The competition is free to enter and play and the prize is nothing other than bragging rights.

The competition is in the form of a fantasy share league playing against other PH'rs. To play you will need to sign up to http://www.lse.co.uk (free and quick and easy).

Then direct yourself over to http://game.lse.co.uk/join-game.asp

Gamename: PHsharetipthread
Password: whotippedgkn

Your starting cash is £10k
Stamp duty will be charged on each buy for a bit of realism
Commission is £5 per trade (again for realism)

So what are you waiting for - get cracking and join in, the more the merrier. Winner is the PH'r with the most in his/her account at the sound of the bell on the 24th.

You are encouraged to shout about your gains and cry over your losses here too.

Good luck thumbup

£7k invested so far. All making a loss, except ECR making a 20% profit, and COMS basically breaking even. Not putting much research into it at this point, so a bit of a 'infinite monkeys' experiment. No doubt it'll do better than my more considered purchases.

£236.30 down so far. Not a bad days work hehe

Should be interesting to see how we end up. I imagine attitudes to risk will change a bit playing with faux money.

As all my real life trades are down, I've opted for the more laid back approach and thrown all the fake money at anything without doing much research.
One of my holdings in in profit on £2!

It's a curious one, this, and I think I might learn something about attitudes from it.

You're right that it's not real, but to an extent my brain decides to file the numbers in my real share account under 'faux money' as well, otherwise it'd probably combust at the thought.

Then, unlike the real one, this game is all in plain view, and I don't like looking like an idiot.

Not bad going. I'm -£247.45. laugh

Don't know how to play this. Temptation is to go fast and loose due to time constraints. Chances are though it will lead to one mistake after another and the guy who plays it safe and just buys £10k RMG will trounce us all. Either that or someone will drop on and multibag with an AIM share.

I guess the game must run a bit behind reality, because the value of my portfolio is still moving. I am currently £20.56 down.

£ -162.08 and currently sitting in last place at close of play.

I think you may be right about buying one "safe" stock and watching it grow over the month. I did think about that but then got buy and sell happy. Which doesn't work.

I do like the Public portfolio.

Some of the other players in other games seem to understand the markets well.

Not sure on the game delay. Same thing happens for real though. Late trades go through after the bell.

Looking forward to seeing the final results and which sort of strategy worked out OK. Fast and loose or slow and steady, or a mixture.

I'm in. Well I will be when the activation email comes through.

Nice way to spend the last half hour of my day.

ETA: Hmmm, still no activation email.

ETA: Right I'm in now, think the word Todger in my username was the problem. Just need the markets to open now.
