importing the car from America

I almost did this early this year. I sorted everything out- shipping, customs etc but dropped out at the last second because I wasn't 100% happy with the report and I think that's the most important thing if you're buying unseen.
It cost me $400 but the car could have cost me a lot more than I budgeted for. As far as I know there's no MOT for old cars and what my seller called patina was what I would call shabby.
Ofcourse if you can fly out and combine a holiday with looking at several in person then you're sorted!
I was also advised container over roll-on-off as they're better protected.
It's a. Minefield but plenty of people do it successfully, others use the services of an importer which isn't cheap but takes a lot of the hassle out of the job.

I just had a quick glance at the link and the guy obviously knows more about it than me but since he wrote it un modified cars over a certain age (35?) now only attract 5% vat when they're imported. Check this out as I may have got muddled.
