bear with me for a long winded post please. okay so I had a Porsche boxster since December 2013 and after 6 months of ownership my mrs bought for me a private plate k*** gdb. I then sold the car at the end of September with the number plate still on to my next door but one neighbour. I now want to transfer this number onto my new vehicle however my neighbour has put another private plate onto the Porsche boxster and received all his new v5c and tax disc etc.in the new plates details so the k*** gdb is now on nothing. I downloaded form 317 from dvla and we got so far filling it out but it asks at the bottom for the v5c of both cars now that's fine on my part but my neighbours v5c is obviously all in his new plates details can anyone help as we both want to get this sorted out thank you. glynn.

I suspect that, because you did not put it on retention, you may now have lost your right to it.

Time travel aside , why not see if it's been put back in to the DVLA list of numbers available , ie try and buy the plate again from them.

If not and it's still lost in the ether then a letter explaining the circumstances to the DVLA may see you reunited with the plate for a small ( not ) fee.

I didn't think the DVLA ever reissued 'lost' plates?
Failing that there are over 500 GDB plates still available on their website.

Can I ask why you sold the car with the plate still on if you wanted to keep it?

Never could get my head around private plates, particularly ones which are so obscure as to be completely meaningless to anyone except the buyer, can somebody please explain ?

That's the best kind! Means something to you, doesn't make you look like a tt because other people don't realise. That's why I like mine anyway...

Your probably up st creek with a stty paddle

I know someone who had a Jag XJ with a private plate

Car was broken into and ignition was demolished causing thousands of damage

Anyway the insurers towed it away to some yard

long story short they sold it onto a salvage company shortly afterwards

and a few months later the private plate was up for auction and reached more than he got as a payout.

I have to agree. If I ever get a private plate, it will be one that means something to me. I really wouldn't be concerned what anyone else thinks of the plate - it's what it would mean to me that would matter.
