Golf/Bora V5 2.3
Discussion
Not another what car? honest... The wifes 206 is going, so is my trusty terrano. We need 1 "gap fill" car for the wife to do school runs and generally jolly about in when im at work (we have a house to sell to release more cash next year)so its a short termer for about £2500...I have a company car for weekend family stuff so its just hers. Petrol is choice and manual, mpg not really important. Ive looked at golf 1.4 SE stuff on 02 and 03 reg with low miles for this price... then seen the V5 models for similar money.... do I don't I?? I don't see many V5s about and know nowt about them or what to look for??

Nice noise but that's about it, crap mpg for crap performance there is a 150 and a 170, the 170 is much better, the later cars were 170.
Is that why the cost is about the same as a 1.4 or 1.6 petrol?? GTis are much more than the V5s!!Like this - http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/1999-SEAT-TOLEDO-2-3-V5-...
Nine hundred nicker, looks tidy too.

I quite liked driving them compared to the 4 cylinder golfs mk4's they are well equiped, comfy in a barge like way and make a nice sound, they work well as an auto.
Fuel consumption is not a plus point, and they are not fast, and dont go round corners very well but make a nice luxury soft-hatch with nice seats, centre arm rest and spongy suspension.
Be aware that these models will smash their sumps on certain speed humps so depending where you live and how you/your wife drive it may not be a good idea (sump is quite expensive). Wherever it was that Vw tested these out it obviously didnt include between the axle speed bumps!

I had a Passat V5. It was a little bit greedy for the performance on offer, but it had a much more up-market feel than the four pot alternatives as it was lovely and smooth and had a very pleasant warble reminiscent of 80s Audi. I liked it and I'm sure that any of the VAG group cars that use that engine would be much the same.
