Much as I am loathe to say it, a microchip could be a worthwhile investment. Don't get me wrong, they have many flaws, but right now I haven't seen too many better options - an ear tattoo perhaps can be discreet depending upon the dog. But for me the jury is out on that as to whether it is more or less painful than the chip. Of course it is less harmful long term.
We have ended up with going with this device

My wife's mum, unbeknown to me, had actually tried a couple of them and had on this particular collar on hire. She has been so impressed with it that she has bought it.
From the conversation I had with Matthew at the company they stand by their product, so much so that if she grows out of the collar within the first year they will replace it free of charge, and thereafter it is only about £20. It comes with a lock too, and if the collar is cut has an alarm. Running costs aren't too expensive, and it even works abroad.
So now ordered
