Hi,

I've been offered a 2006 CLK63 with under 50k & full MBSH. Its not my cup of tea in terms of earning a wage from it but it is something i'd quite like to keep & use in the good months of 2014. Needs a bit of prep but nothing major.

Are there any potential pitfalls with it ? Spec is decent, miles are good.

Thanks

As you say, mileage is good and if it's got history then you should be ok. The engine is a powerhouse and though there are reported problems with head bolts and cam followers (predominantly in the USA), these seem rare.

Give it a shot - the powerunit is one of the great V8's of recent times.

I had CLK500 before CLS63.

Although the 209 shape is now >11 years old, the CLK doesn't look too dated. And the 63 is the best of the breed (less, of course, the crazy Black Series which I've never seen on the road). It is still a fine performance car but, supposedly, it is not so much a driver's car as the equivalent M3 (but it also doesn't have M3 image).

What does surprise me is the residuals for the 63. They seem high at around £20k, especially as 2 year older 55s are around £10k. So, it really comes down to the price. If its £15k and without fault, get it. If it's close to £20k don't. Get a CLS55 at £15k or a 63 at about £19k instead.

One thing to check would be front brake discs. If they are the composite ones (like mine) they are £2k to change at main dealer. Not something you'd want to do for a short period of ownership. They should still have some life left at 50k. Aftermarket ones that look similar can be had for 20% of the price.
