Canon + Flash ; AUTO ISO issue

It's driving me mad!

Canon 5D Mk3 + Nissin Ringflash
Camera in manual, Auto ISO, flash in TTL High speed mode

For some reason Auto ISO doesn't want to go higher than 400. It used to go all the way to 12800 or whatever I set in Auto ISO setting as an upper limit.

Is there any other setting I've accidentally changed and missing now? I searched through menus countless times!

If you’re in manual the camera is expecting you set the ISO manually. It has to use a number so picks on ISO 400. Auto ISO works with all other settings (Tv, Av ect), but not in manual.

No, It works perfectly fine WITHOUT flash, thank you very much...

And also it does change the iso automatically UP TO 400 with flash connected

paul911 has described how the 5D mk ii behaves (ISO 400 if set to auto ISO in manual mode), I don't know what the mk iii does though.

A quick Google found this for the 5D mk iii

Auto ISO normally is locked at ISO 400 when an EOS speedlite is attached and turned on
Auto ISO can be lowered down as far as 100, if over-exposure would occur in fill-flash situations in bright outdoor lighting
If an EX-series speedlite is swiveled for bounce, Auto ISO can extend from 400 or up to 1600 (depending on level of ambient lighting in the scene) and allow for an extra measure of E-TTL exposure when flash is scattered by bouncing

Looks like the 5Diii can have auto ISO on manual then. You can also set the ISO range too. Maybe that’s been inadvertently amended?

There was a firmware update at that sort of time for the 5d mark III wasn't there?
