XJR replacement - pace and comfort?
Discussion
OK, so I have been trying to think of what to replace my X308 XJR with - preferably something interesting and more economical. However, I have hit a major stumbling block. I can easily find something more economical (to be honest it's hard to think of many cars that use more fuel), but where can I get the same combination of comfort and performance? None of the German offerings seem to consider ride comfort as a high priority - I really can't be bothered with crashing into potholes on rock hard suspension.
So what is there? I am after comfortable ride and sub 5.5s 0-60, more than 20mpg and all at a price the right side of £10k. Ideas please

An interesting diesel will be few and far between.
None of the other competitors bar the M and AMG models will be particularly interesting either. It's quick, it's OK on fuel, it looks good (IMO) and is reasonable in running costs.
A valid suggestion provided the OP isn't against diesels.
My old 535d (remapped of course) gave a similar impression of low end pull as my old E55 AMG did, so they certainly don't feel ordinary.

Citroen C6 if you're willing to compromise on the 0-60?
Ride comfort is its forte with air suspension plus lots of toys if you get the Exclusive model.
I'm afraid it will probably be a diesel though....
If he's compromising the 0-60 he might as well go for a X350 XJ Diesel. Ride comfort is its forte with air suspension plus lots of toys if you get the Exclusive model.

Lets not turn this into a petrol vs. diesel thread
Let the OP decide whether it meets his needs or not.
I'm saying it depends on the importance the OP places on either of those.
Let the OP decide whether it meets his needs or not.
However, being realistic, if you're still after something interesting I doubt a diesel is going to cut it after owning a supercharged petrol V8.

X350 XJR!
This. I moved from a X308 XJR to a sodding Saab 9-3. Everything about it feels cheap when comparing it to the Jag, aside from the fuel/running costs. X350 XJR with an LPG conversion is what I would go for (and what I will hopefully be going for in spring next year.Plenty of food for thought! Thanks for all the replies.
Love the C6 but not sure that I would be happy with the performance drop.
As a general rule I steer clear of diesel cars. Not because of any luddite refusal to try them, but because having been a diesel development engineer for 13 years I spend far too much time driving round in them to want to own one! However, 535d is interesting idea, will go take a look at some (even a 335d has appeal, though previous experience of owning a 3-series, albeit an E46, was that ride comfort was low on the priority list in Munich!).
X350 has crossed my mind but I struggle with the looks (fickle eh!). That said, a bit more boot space would make LPG an option where it really wouldn't be sensible on the X308 (unless there is somewhere to put the tank that I am not aware of?)
I looked at big Mercs when I was buying the Jag, as well as 7-series and A8s. Might revisit those options
Wish they had done a TDV8 X350 - that might have been a good option!

To be fair the XJ TDVi is really quite adequate. It isn't in XJR territory but the combination of a fair bit of torque and a relatively low kerb weight means it feels as fast, and sometimes faster, than the regular petrol examples.Alpina B5 (E60)
Rare, very fast, practical, comfortable, leather, wood and that 'special something' that makes it feel way nicer than any other off the peg German saloon car - Rides great to!
Only trouble is, there is only one currently for sale in the UK (that i know of) and its silver with black as opposed to blue with cream.
