Sansaire - new Kickstarter'd sous vide offering
Discussion
I've been longing to get stuck into sous vide for years now, since I first tasted sous vide pigeon. The cost is coming down and the Sous Vide Supreme Demi has been on my "I'll buy one soon" list for a while. It looks like it may be coming down a bit further now.

This thing is offered at $199 plus '$20-$50' delivery to Europe. That works out at about £150. Any thoughts on how this might fare? Anybody have one on order?

That looks awesome. Perhaps some kind PHer might be prepared to bring one back from the US?http://sansaire.com

What about the voltage though - will it still work on 240V?
I backed it on Kickstarter ($199 + $20 shipping) - so I've paid about £140 up front.
The bad news is that they have just put shipping back from late November until the end of January to make a design change to the casing. The good news is that they have said that they will reimburse any customs/duty charges backers incur.
Disappointed that it won't be here for Christmas, but looking forward to trying it out!

I was following the Nomiku version on kickstarter and placed a pre-order but believe they had problems with the 220v version and haven't heard anything recently.
This could be a great alternative although wonder if the addition of the 'bath' and insulation may make something like the Sous-vide supreme better value and more efficient?

This is how you do it properly. The kettle is now swapped for a slow cooker and it maintains temperature within around 0.5 degrees.
Total cost about £20 and a slow cooker!
The sense of danger each time you turn it on also adds to the thrill of the cook!

Surely this kind of thing is an idea Raspberry Pi project.

The lack of circulation the Supreme has always niggled. It's probably not a big issue for a home cook? This could be a great alternative although wonder if the addition of the 'bath' and insulation may make something like the Sous-vide supreme better value and more efficient?

Ultimately a stirred bath is the best option but only really noticable when you have a bath packed with stuff for relatively short periods where the natural convection of the water isn't effective. As for insulation in a domestic environment i wouldnt have thought it would make any difference. At work we have a 30 litre bath that is on all day and night with stuff in it. Thats wrapped up like a hot water cylinder!

My rig up uses a earthenware slow cooker and maintains a temp that cycles between +/- 1 deg c. which while not "technically ideal" and gives us beautiful results every time, to the point we can't be bothered spending the £300+ a "proper" machine has been up to now. Main downside is only the non-intuitive industrial temperature controller from RS components and the clumsiness of it all meaning mrs avoids using it herself. On our wedding list at amazon is the "giles and posner" sous vide water bath which are down to £100~, these use a metal insert bath so should be more stable as there's less mass to transmit heat through.
Can't see that lack of circulation in a device this size should be an issue- it's not like you're going to get hot and cold spots in a body of water 10" across is it?

thats a good price, i mean how does an insulated pot, a low volt heating element, a timer and an accurate temperature gauge cost exactly?i just cant get my head around why they cost so much, they dont seem to have much new tech, its all pretty much basic , as far as i can see?
My issue with that kick starter one is that the container will not have a lid to stop evaporation (although may not be too much of an issue i guess) or to help keep the heat in so it will be working all the time.
Its also pricy still for what it does, imo

Update for those interested, we have used the G&P several times now for our most-sous-vided favourite (stuffed chicken breast) and it's superb- probably better than my already superb slow cooker contraption which did tend to cycle through about 2deg, so I can only presume the G&P is keeping the temp more accurate despite lack of circulation.

Update from Sansaire - manufacturing has begun and shipping is 'on-track to begin by January 30th'. What emerged after the initial news of the delay was that, at around the same time, Sansaire were effectively being sued for patent infringements by Polyscience. It isn't clear whether the delay in manufacturing was caused by this or the reasons stated by Sansaire back in November. The bad news is that they have just put shipping back from late November until the end of January to make a design change to the casing. However, things seem to have been resolved regarding the lawsuit - and a container of the circulators is being shipped directly to the UK, which will hopefully mean that any import/VAT charges will have been covered before onward shipping to end users within the EU.
Now, any recommendations for a vacuum sealer?
