Hello PH people,

I'm going to need to give the car a thorough valet this weekend, involving a rendez-vous with Henry the Hoover.

Car is parked on the street, house is on the other side of the street with a relatively busy live traffic lane in the middle.

Is it safe to run a vacuum cleaner cable across the street, with Fiestas and 44 tonners rolling over it?

Seems to work fine at Le Mans with 20 fridges working off various extension cables and 4 gang bars.

I wouldn't worry, it's not ideal, but it isn't going to be for long is it? An hour at most?

I wouldn't either.

Just drive to a petrol garage when you are done and spend a couple of quid on the car vac.

Imagine the fun if the cable snags on a passing car. I want to see a Henry violently snatched away from it's owner at 30mph! Film it and post to YouTube!

I'm sure it would be fine.

If it's cold, you could also place the socket in a bucket of warm water to make sure that it doesn't freeze.

Even if you judge it safe, you're taking a big liberty by making the judgement on behalf of everyone who will drive over it. You have no evidence beyond your gut feeling on how the cable will cope with that treatment over that time period.

Find another way.

And the worst that will happen? The cable will snap and cut the power to Henry, and in all probability trip the fuse board.

Are you a H+S officer or Civil Servant perchance?

Personally, if it were me, no way. Among your problems will be someone taking you to the cleaners if they have an accident.

And bog standard leccy cable may take a few cars taking it easy on a drive before it will start to break up or damage the cores but a busy lane with lorries? The cable can get picked up by treads of larger vehicles but the risk of it getting flipped up by any vehicle and snagged.......

Your henry/limbs/insurance/ etc.

I'm sure it would be fine but as you stated its a relatively busy road so I'd be more worried about it getting snagged on a passing car and potentially damaging a couple of them including yours.

I can imagine a post on here this evening......

"I was driving home from work when some lazy tt who couldn't be arsed to take his car to a fking car wash and spend £1 to use their Hoover had stretched a cable right across the fking road!

As I drove over the fking thing the cable caught in my wheel arch and launched his fking Hoover into the side of car denting and scratching both fking doors and the rear wing. The then tried to blame me for driving over the cable too fast.

So, should I hammer frozen sausages into the tts lawn and then his wife, followed by launching a can of red bull through his windscreen or should I go to the police?"

wink

When i was 17 the company i worked for was involved in moving a massive piece of refinery equipment by road. My boss and me were tasked with measuring the width of the road using a tape measure. The first car that went over ripped it out his hand and dragged it into the distance.

A quiet housing estate, yes. A main road, i wouldn't.

Just sounds like he's talking common sense to me...

It will at the very least shag your extension cable! (normal wiring is not designed to be driven over, and the conductors will be damaged/deformed, probably cut through their insulative sheathing and short out)

Are there any houses on the side of the road where your car is parked?

Knock on their door and ask them if you can plug your hoover in.

This is going to involve something bear grylls would be proud of. Get 2 branches approx 6ft tall and place into bucket with concrete one on each side of road.

Saw a notch or groove into top of branches and run the cable taught through them. Make sure it is very tight wit no droop or slack in middle of cable.

Cars can run under cable while you Hoover your interior.

Alternatively go to a local car wash and watch some Eastern Europeans make a far better job in much less time for about a tenner.
