Hi the main thing im not sure on and would really appreciate advice/thoughts on is if i can put a decat system on my standard car without causing problems other than cel light which i know you can buy extender bungs for.
I suppose you can decat however assuming you're in the UK, you'll need to re-cat prior to each MoT and not get caught in the meantime.iceman385 said:
Not really worried about power gains just want the car to sound like a supercar and if i can put a decat system on a standard car without any adverse effects other than sound. Has any one on here done this with there 996tt.?
I have de-catted my GT2, left the sports silencer. It has been re-mapped but that wont affect the sound. It sounds awesome, not too loud on start up and pottering round you can here the turbos on the way up and on the way down. I love it. When you crack it open hard, it sounds savage. It pops and bangs and spits flames on upshifts. Its the tits. Do it. You wont regret it. Cheers for all the replies and some good interesting info but i still haven't really got the answer im looking for i just need to know if i can put a decat exhaust system on my standard 996tt?
If anyone can give me a straight answer or if anyone has done this to there 996tt that would be great as have exhausts lined up just dont want to buy till i know for sure. Cheers.

I don't think you need to de-cat to get more noise, as there are options to modify your existing pipe rather than splashing out on a new one.
And with stuff like this, it's a real gamble if you'll like the sound after having it fitted or not. I had mine modded and it sounds fantastic, loud and has a real rumble at low revs, then sounding aggressive on full chat. Hearing the turbo's spool up is fantastic as it sounds like you're sucking in the earths atmosphere!
But, this does come at a price..............cabin drone. Which is why I took it off and put something else on. So you may ask, why am I telling you this
I guess it's the fact I have a ready modded exhaust in my garage if you want a cheaper option for a fantastic sound and can live with some droning. Just a thought.
May try and upload a sound clip if you fancy a listen.

I had some baffle material removed and also holes drilled through the inlet/outlet pipes from the silencer boxes. You could try this yourself with a hole saw bit if you fancy a bash?
Just a case of removing the tips from the outlet pipe on each side and drill through the pipe you see as you look down the inside. Basically, the exhaust is routed from the cat to a rear silencer box, and then routed from the silencer to the tip. The pipes in and out of the silencer are mated next to each other and kind of all in one so to speak. The hole allows some of the gases, and subsequently more noise to bypass the silencer straight out through the tip.
I found this thread a while back, strangely enough after mine had been done. Think you may find it interesting and explain the above a little better
Although some claimed no droning which may have been the case, but certainly not mine. To be fair you get used to it but sometimes having a conversation meant speaking louder than you would normally.
Mine is like a night and day difference in sound, and you could be heard long before you were seen as well, but it's not stupid loud if you know what I mean.

I have the Gemballa exhaust (which is basically a re-branded Remus), it has 100cel cats and sound is amazing without being too loud. Don't have any videos sorry but there are some on the net. The porsche is a completely different car with it on in terms of sound (didn't expect much in the way of power gains as I have the heavy techart wheels on)
I initially bought 'muffler delete' exhaust from the US which was basically a sports cat (100cel) and nothing else (i.e. straight pipe out), it was stupidly loud, gave me a headache after 15mins of driving but worst of all resonated the car! I've had loud exhausts in the past but it was just unbearable. I wouldn't recommend a decat on a 996 as I think it makes the car sound like a tractor but each to their own!
If you use anything less that 200cel cats you'll get the check engine light on. I just bought the two bungs to fool the sensor for my Gemballa. Lastly keep an eye on US ebay for turbo exhausts as my gemballa only cost £1200 delivered.

I have 100cel cats and no CEL. I have them hooked up to a tubi exhaust and it sounds amazing. I was in town when a civic type r decided to give it the beans from the lights, figured why not, they've heard vtec yo! Why not some flat 6! Jees, it sounded like something out of a war film, damn it was loud! Haven't driven through town since! lol
Ok an update i bought the pipe from leighB (cheers lee and was very nice to meet you).
Well where do i start First of fitting a new pipe to a 996tt isn't as easy as i first thought and after a lot of advice and research i started the process firstly you will most likely need to change all the studs nuts and washers on the cat to turbo and exhaust heat shields that's if they don't snap of when trying to get them of!, luckily for me the guy who fitted the pipe had a snapon heat tool and didn't have too much problem no studs snapping in the turbos etc, you will also need new crush washers for cat-turbo and probably new exhaust hangers/brackets and probably new lambada sensors i luckily only needed 1 new one.
Now for the good part Oh my F#*#*ng god no one mod on any car i have owned has truly changed a car as much as this pipe, if im completely honest i had lost abit of love for my 996tt after the initial purchase nearly a year ago mainly due to feeling abit unattached to the drive and felt it was a bit soulless.
Now the car has properly come alive like it had been strangled suffocated before it now has character and soul, the sound from the pipe is intoxicating at idle it has a nice very deep humm to it and then when you open it up it sounds like a real race car its got the flat six growl and then just goes ballistic, on top of this its spools up much quicker and the car feels abit more responsive you can also hear the turbos abit more (the sound clips leighb uploaded really don't do it justice).
If anyone is contemplating getting a different pipe due to feeling the standard 996tt is too quiet, and personally i think sounds like a hover, then don't hesitate it will be the best mod you will ever do! my car now sounds like a supercar and sounds as good as it looks.
If anyone wants to hear it and is in North london/herts area or at the ace cafe meet on the last monday of the month, this month will be 24th, give me a shout id be happy to show.
