I've just bought one of the kids a computer and would like to know if it is possible (and how to do it!) to enable the new computer to be connected to the internet on the same broadband connection as my main computer. The main reason is my eldest is in the habit of thinking he knows what he's doing with computers. Whilst the reality is I have to spend ages trying to fix his latest cock-up. I'd like him to have internet acess on the new computer but don't want him to be able to affect the main PC in anyway regardless of what crap program or virus he's aquired. Is this a network type thingy and can I do it without having a second broadband connection installed (by the way it's NTL via set top box)

The easiest way to do it is to share the internet connection via your own local network, which is uplinked (to broadband) by a router.

There are different routers available; both cable or wireless. Most have an own firewall, some allow you to share a printer with both computers.

Assuming Windows XP......

First connect the two machines with a 'crossover' network patch cable. This is a special cable used for connecting 2 machines directly, rather than through a hub or switch.

Second, turn on Internet connection sharing on the Broadband connected machine.

Third, run the network setup wizard on the new machine and it should see the connection to the internet on the other machine and offer to use it.

At the end of the Wizard, say 'No , I don't need to set up any more machines'
