Jag F frightens Porsche?

Tut tut. Base spec is more expensive than a Cayman S and slower even on paper, let alone the road. Top spec would get nowhere near a Turbo S or GT3.
It irritates me that any decent sports csr is said to 'scare' or 'challenge' Porsche.
I quite like Jaguars, but they have a long way to go before they could be said to be equals.

I have extensively driven the F types, both V6 and V8, and am a long time Porsche owner (GT3RS). I have also driven lots of Caymans and 991s.
There are many reasons why people buy cars. Its more than the handling on a track. Its also about aesthetics, comfort and so on. The sound of the Jag V8 for instance is amazing.
I would not discount its ability to be cross shopped against Porsches, and I think in many cases it will do very well. ALso, a fully loaded Porsche gets much more expensive very quickly.

I think the article is right. The coupe looks so beautiful and sounds so sweet, that it tugs at the emotions so much that lap times become irrelevant. Something discussed on here in light of the turbos launch.
Don't discount the home advantage either, there is something cool about a car which looks and sounds like that being made in my home town in a factory I have driven past for years, that has its own appeal.
I actually drive past it yesterday and it looks like the coupe is attached to the side of the building on display (still under wraps though).
Some whispers of 0% finance deals too, that could tip many hands on trade in time.
The article doesn't state that the f-type 'frightens Porsche', stating instead that the power output of the v8 is sufficiently high to 'frighten any 911 variant' and continues to add any Aston vantage variant too i.e. it's a direct comparison of power outputs not a 'Porsche should be worried' f-type is going to eat its lunch (although as posted above, it might very much appeal to 911 buyers/owners).
Here's the quote -
That's underlined by the fact Jaguar has chosen to make the flagship V8 a proper R version, with a headline power output and bully boy swagger to frighten the most powerful of 911s.
Seems to me a very different meaning to the one implied by your thread title.

I like the look of it and the noise is awesome but.......the crackles on the over-run would annoy me after a bit. Dont get me wrong, the odd pop in Hinehead Tunnel is awesome but if you look at Shmee's clip of him in the V8 its doing it everytime he is off the accelerator, this would make going out for a bag of Haribos for the kids at the local One-Stop a little embarrassing.
All good points, and I perhaps did misread the emphasis a little.
It still strikes me as an article that does a lot of comparing to Porsches without noting that the Jag is far more expensive than a comparable Porsche (in terms of performance, which is what the writer seems impressed by if you not all the power refs).

It is gorgeous, though. I also agree re home advantage. I wanted to buy a Jag when I started looking, but the F was only available as an open top and struck me as being quite a bit over-priced relative to a Cayman S (especially as you could get these used, which I know isn't Jag's fault!)

Bit of a Porka fan are you?
The new Jag is a great bit of kit and will surely take some sales from Porsche. Surely this is good competition for everybody.
I'm looking forward to comparison tests between the F-Type R (V8 / 550BHP) and 991S. Very similar price. I think the Jaguar will do rather well.
Looks-wise, the 991 doesn't get close. I don' t think the 991's 'real-world' performance will be anywhere near the Jaguar's either. (By real-world, I mean acceleration in-gear, not from a dead stop where the 911's extra traction allows it an advantage in 0-xxx figures). As for the F-Type's ballistic sonics, once again, it's in a different league to the 991.
I know some will disagree with me on my next point, but I find the 991 a rather detached and bland car to drive. Dead steering, too 'GT', over-servoed brakes - altogether a rather uninspiring, anodyne experience. I found the convertible F-Type I test-drove a few months back to be more 'raw' (if not quite as clinically capable). I've a feeling this difference will be greatly amplified in the lighter, more-powerful, coupe version of the F-Type and will appeal to many prospective buyers.

Hope jag does very well and suspect they will, it's a lovely looking and sounding thing, and more special than the Porsche rivals.
I suspect of course the handling on the limit/ultimate feel may go the P way but most punters will never experience that, so it will only matter to Evo and PH directors

Its a cracking looking car that coupe. I drove the F types (roadsters) V6 and V8 at a Jag customer day at Dunsfold a few months ago. Basically i was allowed to go as fast as i liked and i have to say they were both really great. the V8 was Harder to slow down and had more push on the front but the grunt was superb however the V6 was a real sweetheart, great sound and very light on its feet. If only they made a manual trans version...as the auto's are, well...auto's..

I've just bought a 2007 XJR so not F type but it means I've visited a coupe of main dealers and seen new Jags. You know what? It's a bit like BMW making fairly shyte stuff quite quick but nothing new or remotely interesting for decades then Kazzar! they make a world beating superbike just like that out of nowhere.
Jag showrooms are now awash with a few really seriously great looking cars, many with 5.0 supercharged engines and judging from the mini-4.2 version in my XJR and it's build quality, i reckon they're properly in the game now.
A supercharged F type would definitely turn my head away from non-911 sports Porsches, no question, especially since Porsche are resting on their laurels customer service wise.
