Hi all,
I have just put a deposit on an 07 997 turbo from a non Porsche dealer.
One of the conditions of sale from me is a pre warranty inspection from the local Porsche centre, so hopefully this should pick up any issues.
They are offering an RAC platinum warranty for 6 months. If I don't take this then they will discount by the cost of the warranty, so I have options.

I therefore have a couple of questions:
1) How much is a Porsche warranty likely to cost for a year ? (I understand they are two year policies now, right ?)
2) is there a better option, in terms of cost or coverage ?
3) will the pre warranty inspection tell me if there are any over revs logs, which is one of my concerns ? (seen this mentioned on US forums, but no idea how you find out this info in the UK)

Any info gratefully received smile

Many thanks in advance for your replies.

Regards,
John w.

Just over £2000 for 2 years.

No

Yes - Have them pull the DME.
Standard 111 point check. Not sure if they pull the Y pipe. But have them pull it and check for oil. If you got oil the intake you got a leaking turbo. As you know there are two on the car. The cost of one is over £4000 I believe.

Having had a Porsche warranty in the past, in my opinion they are now overly restrictive and expensive.

OK there is some kudos in having it, but at around £2500 for 2 years it is costly. You will also have to have any defects rectified before a warranty will be considered.

Finally the question of over rev ranges may also come into play!

Personally I chose to opt for a 3rd party warranty for my MY08 997.1 TT at £650 per year.

Have you had to make a claim though?

No, but with my previous 997.1 C2S I was refused a renewal because it had 6 ignitions in Rev ranges 4 & 5. Despite being an obvious glitch the still wanted £400 for an engine review, and that is on top of the £250 for the 111 point test.

Seeing as any IMS/RMS issues are unlikely with a Mezger car, I am pretty happy with the repair insurance I have. Besides I don't like being told that I cannot fit any alternative parts to what is essentially my asset. So my car has an entertainment/navigation/communication/system that works effectively.

OPC have you over a barrel, they charge double the commercial rate for an aftermarket warranty, that the majority are too afraid not to have because the powerplant has a likelyhood of failing more often than the industry average and costs an extortionate amount to repair/rebuild

Double the rate? I bet the main aftermarket warranties are at least £6-700/year (with their highest claim limit, OPC labour rate and "wear & tear" option), Porsche is maybe 50% higher, but for much better cover.

A better comparison would be with another manufacturer. I had a renewal through from Mercedes 2 years ago for an SL55AMG - £2950 for one year eek

it's the whole, issue with tyres and batteries which puts me off them now.

I like to fit better tyres and also paying £250 for a battery over as £85 Bosche is daft.
As YOU WILL NEED a new battery at some point.

so a lot of people now have a slush fund, which allows you to buy better tyres and battery etc

Would I bother on a 997 turbo, nope. def keep to the slush fund way imo on that car.

If I was buying a 997 Turbo ((a £100,000 car, new) I'd want a warranty, and the only one that would interest me would be the Porsche one.

I'd want the 111 point pre-purchase check in any event, and this would be the starting point wrt going for the Warranty. 2 years might cost £2k +, but it adds value and reduces the risk, IMO.

Thanks for the answers guys, I didn't realise warranties were so contentious smile

MOD500, thanks for that link too.

I have contacted my local OPC and they confirmed those prices, but also said a warranty can be had without the porsche assist. (£1020 a year, or £2040 for two).

Only issue is, the warranty needs to start the day the pre warranty check is carried out.

I had a good look over the RAC warranty and it says it covers up to the value of the car, and does cover turbos etc.
It would be a risk to take it though, as there are bundles of posts on the net about RAC (and others) not paying out.

I think my mind is made up, and a Porsche 1 year job will do.
Interesting to see you can't get a Porsche warranty past 10 years... rolleyes

Thanks all, your comments were really helpful in bringing a bit of clarity to my foggy mind bow
Cheers,
John.

Dont forget to add on the compulsory 111 point check and any costs that might/(will) throw up

Gaxor,
the dealer told me that if your in warranty, that having the service carried out is essentially the same as the check.
this implies the pre check is not needed when you extend, only when there has been a break in cover.
That would also mean than anything needing doing would be done too as your in warranty wink

Obviously I've not tried this, and the dealer might have not been correct when they told me this.

I had the same issue (with virtually the same car) - go factory used warranty for £2K or not. Decided not to after contacting Peter Morgan. Got them to inspect at the dealer before doing the deal. Costs around £300 for a half day inspection producing a 20 page condition report with photos: http://www.porscheinspections.com/

OK, the factory warranty is peace of mind if you like but remember you need to refit anything (and I mean anything) non factory standard with genuine Pork parts or they won't cover you.

Thanks for that.
I am going with the opc inspection for much the same reason, peace of mind that it looks ok.

Did you do a warranty, or not bother at all ?
If you did, who with ?

Cheers
John.

No John. I felt exactly like you and was seriously going to take up a factory warranty - I didn't bother in the end and so far so good. OK, anything can go wrong but where do you draw the line.

As you will know, the 997 Turbo has the "Metzger" motorsport engine which is reveered as "bulletrpoof". I've a mate who has raced cars (and who can afford almost anything!) - he purchased a 997T gen I like ours over a Gen II (that was the latest model at the time) simply on the engine it has installed.

Ps - If I was to have purchased an aftermarket warranty it would have been directly from Pork and not an independant shop.
