Confused about big change in MPG - advice?
Discussion
Can anyone explain this: I had to go on a longish drive a couple of days ago (London - York), while driving out to the M25 there wasn't much traffic. By the time I was up to the M1 I was only averaging 35MPG (Skoda Octavia 2.0TDI). After about an hour I stopped for a coffee, when I pulled back onto the motorway the car felt a bit more responsive, after 5 mins the MPG started to creep up, and for the rest of the journey stayed at just under 42 (normal), and never managed to get it under 41 no matter how fast I drove.
On the way back down I was back to 35, cannot breach 36 regardless of speed or gear!
Has stayed the same since. Constant 35, I didn't buy a diesel car for this!

When did you last re-set the mpg readings..................On the way back down I was back to 35, cannot breach 36 regardless of speed or gear!

I'm betting you use it mainly for town work and you haven't re-set it for a long while

Cold weather?
My civic has just turned in 25.6 mpg on the last tank. All town driving mind but it usually hovers in low 30's for that. Was pretty cold last week and I think that just killed the mpg.
Probably this, it's colder in the mornings which means more time on the choke cycle to warm the engine. My civic has just turned in 25.6 mpg on the last tank. All town driving mind but it usually hovers in low 30's for that. Was pretty cold last week and I think that just killed the mpg.
It's not the cold weather. My Superb averaged an indicated high 50's to the gallon on yesterday's work trip. Temperature doesn't make a huge difference on a long trip, there's only a few percent in it really.
Something's wrong, either that or you drive much faster than most people, 35 mpg average in a VAG 2.0 tdi is 100 mph plus cruising speeds, or, perhaps, a little less but being very aggressive with the accelerator.
In normal fairly heavy motorway traffic, when everyone's doing 70-80 in the right hand lane, I'd expect you to see 50 plus to the gallon, that's on the indicated display, the reality may be a little less (mine claims 55, but is really about 50).
Otherwise, if you stick the cruise control on at 70 mph, you'd get mid 50's on average, based on my experience.
So, if you're not being a hooligan, something isn't doing what it should be. It's probably worth getting it checked out.
Unless of course, you had a very strong head wind.
